If you look at the specs of the S1R vs SL2 which are basically the same camera, you wonder why Leica omitted so many software features.

Likely because Leica thought that they were irrelevant. For some of those features, I agree.

Perhaps because they're not the same? A Panasonic-knocking forum would simply say they copied the Leica body style and mount and added more buttons and software. It's a good thing they aren't the same camera (unless you just count pixels), as it gives us choice.

Well they are using the same IBIS, similar sensors and technology. Build quality and design slightly different but yes there are more similarities than differences

This can be said about Samsung vs Apple flagship phones. They all have IBIS, they have 5G, they have OLED displays, they’re mostly a brick with a screen and touch panel, they all have bluetooth and Wifi, they have wireless charging. They only differ by the charging cable, build quality and design is slightly different. There are far more similarities than differences.

Wrong comparison. Samsung is not into a partnership with Apple and actually has been fined for copying it

Leica and Panasonic are into a well known partnership, they willingly share multiple internal elements including sensors, AF technology, etc, and Panasonic has even "Leica certified" lenses.

yes thats correct >

"The agreement includes the extension of license agreement for use of Leica's trademark on Panasonic's digital camera products as well as expansion and strengthening of technological cooperation between the two companies.

Based on this agreement, Panasonic will be able to commercialize digital camera products with Leica lenses over the next five years, from October 2014 to September 2019 while Leica will be able through the expansion and strengthening of technological cooperation to utilize Panasonic's digital technology in its own product development. The agreement will allow both companies to boost product competitiveness by combining Leica's optical technology and Panasonic's digital technology.

The companies had signed a cooperative agreement for digital audiovisual equipment lenses in August 2000 and agreed to cooperate in the digital camera sector in July 2001.

Since then, the companies have built up a cooperative relationship in optical technology and quality control, and brought high-performance and high-quality digital cameras to the market by fusing Leica's superior optical technology with Panasonic's digital technologies such as image processing.

The technological cooperation newly agreed upon in this agreement will reinforce the partnership between the two companies, enabling them to accelerate the development of excellent digital camera products with enhanced appeal to the global camera market."

🙂 I think sarcasm doesn’t work well on a forum but this just proves a point that saying two cameras sharing similar technologies doesn’t make them effectively the same.

To take it further, the iPhone also uses Samsung NAND and OLED displays. :)

Most digital cameras coming from Leica have Panasonic tech in them. Even parts of the M assume.
In addition if you purchase a leica certified S Pro Lens from Panasonic you are getting a Leica lens essentially at a fraction of the cost. You miss out on the German build quality and maybe a few special elements but the optical performance is about equal.

the S Pro 50 vs SL 50 Summilux is a great example of this.

if you want a current Leica camera that is all German from top to bottom go for the MP film camera.

It will probably be the final nail in the coffin for the S line.

And for the SL, I don't know. I tried the 50R but it was sluggish. It's a camera more suited to studio / landscape. But maybe Fuji improved this aspect on the GFX100S

This is where I think we might see a stellar comeback happening in a few years just like when the M transitioned from film to digital.

As people get accustomed to spend more on equipment the base they have created with the lenses will carry them forward.

Will there be an S with optical viewfinder? That I doubt. Will there be a mid format for the price of an entry level Mercedes that is out of stock in the first year upon release? We all know where this is heading I guess .... 😀 I am saving ....

What we know for sure that there will be a fantastic mid format system for the price of a Vespa!
