MrFriendly Posted December 31, 2020 Share #1 Posted December 31, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just received my brand new APO-Summicron-M 75mm from New Jersey and there are visible cracks on the inner ring. This can't possibly be normal, is it? The date on the box reads 2019/08/05, but that inner ring looks worn out. Should I be concerned? Welcome, dear visitor! adan Posted December 31, 2020 Share #3 Posted December 31, 2020 (edited) Not just the cracks - the whole texture of that ring looks wrong. Looks rubbery, but should be felt or metal? (been a while since I stared at the inside of a 75 ASMA). I'm a little confused by your description of getting "a brand-new lens from New Jersey." Is that Leica USA in New Jersey? Are they selling new gear direct to the public? Edited December 31, 2020 by adan

If I touch it just slightly, it leaves black residue/particles on my finger. It's definitely not felt. I bought the lens brand new from Leica USA online store. The invoice in the box shows it was shipped from Allendale, NJ 07401.

Daniel C.1975 Posted December 31, 2020 Share #6 Posted December 31, 2020 If this one is brand new my name is Albert Einstein. Maybe a Long time Sales window lens with years of UV-light exposure? Doesn‘t matter, you can only send it back. Cheers
wda Posted December 31, 2020 Share #7 Posted December 31, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am a little surprised you asked the question. Your first questions should be addressed to the vendor. Do let us know the official response.

I just couldn't believe it. The inner and outer boxes look clean and brand new. The outer box was sealed with two stickers, which is what I'm used to seeing from my other brand new lens I've bought in the past. The lens itself, however, looks used, which doesn't make sense. I've filed for a return/exchange; we'll see what happens.
Kwesi Posted December 31, 2020 Share #9 Posted December 31, 2020 Do the serial numbers match on box and lens?
lct Posted December 31, 2020 Share #10 Posted December 31, 2020 This is simply unacceptable. I would not accept a repair. Ask for a replacement or a refund.
farnz Posted December 31, 2020 Share #11 Posted December 31, 2020 When does the serial number say the lens was made? Pete.
BrianS Posted December 31, 2020 Share #12 Posted December 31, 2020 (edited) That is dry-rot. Those crumbs will be all over your sensor. It looks like someone replaced the material with old rubber sheets bought in the 1960s from a craft store. They need to take this lens back and give a full refund. Report back on the response. The serial number should allow you to determine the manufacturing date. Hard to believe Leica could make and inspect one with this problem. This could also be a batch problem, like some glue or material that acts badly. This has happened- I've seen board manufacturers change a process and have it delaminate after months of use. jaeger Posted December 31, 2020 Share #13 Posted December 31, 2020 it looks brand new condition in ebay standard. someone listed a lens used but indicate it's "better than new" - I found it really intriguing.

At least that's one variable out of the way so I'd start wondering about the conditions that the lens has been stored in, particularly temperature and humidity. Bottom line, a brand new 75 APO-Summicron asph lens lens should not look like this and I think you have strong grounds for returning it for a new one or a full refund. Good luck! Pete.
MrFriendly Posted December 31, 2020 Author Share #17 Posted December 31, 2020 One of the first things I noticed with the 75 was that it had plenty dust particles on the front element, even more on the rear element, and some dust particles on the inside of the lens. My other Leica lenses in the past were always in absolutely pristine condition. Now, dust on a lens doesn't bother me, but does this mean the lens was used at some point? Maybe a demo lens? Would a Leica vendor try to pass off a used lens as new?
