Thats it for me then. All my L stuff will be up for sale. Leica has lost the plot entirely and cannot be trusted. Looking forward to getting a Hasselblad, equipped with a fine selection of wide angle primes.

Hasselblad has just a tiny selection of lenses and is terribly slow. And we have seen that multishot delivers better IQ than the X1D. But if you are happy with it .....      I simply don’t understand why you cannot work for the meantime with the SL 16-35.

I get the impression you wanted to switch the system anyway and finally found a “reason” for this step.

You rather trust an Asian (Chinese ?) company that is completely unknown to most in the west ....    I find this quite odd..   But everybody gets happy in his own way.   🤔🤣😷🤧

I did not buy the 24-90 and will probably also not buy a 28-70. But I see no reason to be upset if they offer it before the primes. I still use some M primes if I want to, but very rarely. In these times priorities should also shift a little bit.

I think with the lockdown caused delays how can you be upset about the delay with the wide primes. They are coming and I would think just because there might be another zoom on the horizon would not imply they re prioritized the wides.

Also the 28-70 or 24-70 is just a rumor, not even from a trusted site.

While I can see them going after a smaller zoom based on popularity of the Summicrons I could also see them rework the 50 Summilux.

A map would be really helpful to me.

Cheers

I never bought the 24-90, and on occasion I do see possible images more than 100 m from the car, so I find the idea of a 28-70 at half the weight and size intriguing.  I suspect that if the rumor is correct, there could be a partner involved, as there was in the 16-35.

Leica doesn't do things because I need them.  Or want them.  My mental picture of the motivations of engineers and their managers in a German company is that they all want to keep working and getting paid for providing new products at a high level of quality to a known (and hopefully growing) set of customers.

Hasselblad is Swedish.
Its major shareholder is very famous DJI. The world leader in drones for photography and video. It is far from unknown. DJI is synonymous of drones.

One majority shareholder does not make your company chinese overnight.
Hasselblad is even more Swedish than IKEA which headquarters and foundation (which own the company) are not even located in 🇸🇪

Well you have the right to your own opinion. If you want to see it this way, then you will do anyway. But I know what is swedish and what not. No need to discuss this in depth.   Enjoy your fake news ....     :D    Enjoy a trip to your swedish lens factories.   Maybe you can have dinner with the swedish workers. Maybe you could even make a video about the manufacture....

I actually wonder what is more swedish in your eyes, Hassy or Polestar ?    (No need to answer, I am not interested. A rhetorical question.)

The Chinese literally went to the moon and back this month with a sample of moon rocks. If they want to make high quality consumer goods they are more than capable of it. Let's focus more on the quality of the products, not who or where they were made, unless the focus is on whether the people who made it were treated fairly.

I spoke to a second source today, probably in an even higher position than the first one. He confirmed that the next lens is the 28-70. He was more reserved about the January announcement but did say it was at the latest in the first trimester of 2021. It’s coming!

So where do you feel this would sit within the pricing structure? ..above or below the 24-90 ?

if this correct I for one am v interested.

I suppose that you had already come to that conclusion, and were waiting for the right moment to make it official. Hasselblad makes wonderful cameras, I hope you find them to your liking.

There's a misconception that a company can only work on one thing at a time. Like here: if they bring-out a zoom, it means that they've been "ignoring" primes. You see this all the time with Leica: they bring-out a special edition, and people will complain that "they should really be working on (that person's one missing bit of kit)" As-if the person sourcing vegan octopus leather adhesives is one-and-the-same as the person designing a circuit connector.

There probably isn't much to tell about the sequencing of releases. They come-out when they are ready, and that depends on a large number of factors Tooling, sub-contractors, materials, production capacity on specific machinery. For all we know, this rumoured zoom uses a production design from a large sub-contractor (Panasonic, Sigma, or other), and it just happens to be ready now. Should Leica wait?

One a related note, it's been quite a year for Leica. They released the S3, Q2-M, SL2-S, M10-M, M10-R. I think they may have out-Sony'd Sony, in terms of having a new camera out every few months.

+1. And all of these - with the exception of S3 - are on the surprise list for most of us...

All during a pandemic, when many businesses are struggling to stay afloat. And amidst an already severely declining camera industry. Leica has been a relative shining star... at least on the production end... let’s hope for the same profit-wise.

We all know that Hasselblad lenses are pre build in Japan by Fujifilm for H series and by Nikko for X series.

But final assembly are made in Hasselblad factory at Göteborg. Because Hassy is adding its made in sweden leaf shutter mechanism.

Of course their bodies are made in Göteborg

No chinese stuff.

By the way, have you visited Shenzhen. The real silicon valley is there. No body can conceived electronic stuff without Shenzhen expertise. Not even Apple, who relies heavily on their tech. That’s how the world works now. Prime technologies are designed in Shenzhen, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan or Israel. Not in California anymore.

Leica also got involved with two Shenzhen successful companies : Huawei and Insta360.

I guess that nobody is immune to chinese tech giants.

Leica M10-R, S3 and M10 Monochrom sensors are made with the help of Huawei in their common R&D center in Wetzlar

Jeff, they don't know if it will be an internal or expandable zoom. They did reconfirm the 28-70 range, constant aperture, and the approaching release. They confirmed as well that the 28mm was imminent too, and they for the 21/24, one will need patience.

Question, does Leica attend CES?

Thanks for asking and follow-up.

Leica Geosystems has been honored at CES, including 2020..

I don’t follow CES specifically, but Leica Camera hasn’t seemingly been big on industry shows, many of which are losing steam anyway.  They dropped out of Photokina, for instance, years ago.

Leica Geosystems (LG) and Leica Camera (LC) are two completely independent companies. The only thing they share in common is the logo and that they both originated from Ernst Leitz.

LG is a subsidiary of Hexagon which is publicly traded and HQ’ed in Sweden. LC is majority owned by Dr. Andreas Kauffman with a large minority stake owned by Blackstone Group (at least as of 2018 but there was news about them wanting to sell their 45% stake in LC).

Didn't suggest otherwise, which is why I named and discussed them separately.
