Gotta say... I'm loving the colors on my SL2s more and more... makes me wonder why I'm still holding on to my M10P.

Gibbous II

Shooting at a focal length of 2200mm asks a lot of any camera system. Last night I tried out the SL2-S at this 2+ meter FL. It was inserted into a 6" refractor pointed at the gibbous moon. The astronomical seeing (air turbulence) was pretty stable and the results looked pretty good for a 24mp sensor + bayer filter. The image above is  mosaic of three different exposures, optimizing the overall sharpness with the best sections of each.

I had also shot a few files with my astronomy camera - a monochrome 6MP streaming camera that I use mainly for solar imaging. It can record the full disk of the sun or moon at a focal length of just under 1 meter... but when the moon is not full, it can fit the entire object using the focal length of my 6" refractor at prime focus (1100mm). I can process the streaming file, selecting the sharpest individual frames and then aligning and averaging them for further processing. In the image below, the data from the streaming camera makes up the luminosity of the image. Overlayed on top is a color layer provided by an exposure from the Leica SL2-S to provide the subtle mineral tones of the lunar surface. The Leica file was larger (shot with a 2X tele-extender) so it had to sized and rotated to fit the luminance layer.

A lot of work to shoot a mundane image of the gibbous moon... but it was a beautiful night to be out!
