Rob, I hear you about this lens totally.  I'm not in the habit of putting a lens I'm less than happy with in the cupboard, it usually gets sent off to a dealer or hits e-bay😄!

Think I said somewhere before I was sitting on the fence, still there I think.  I just can't make up my mind about it, I look at results and keep thinking maybe if I had tried something different.  Anyway, I got to the point after trying to get some shots of gulls this morning on the CL (usually pretty easy I find), that it bugged me enough to drop an e-mail to Sigma, will wait their response.  I'm at the coast for a quick 24hrs and about to go try with the SL2, will see how that leaves me feeling.   Hopefully a bit less frustrated.

Maybe I should hold off on making that purchase for a while, not withstanding the fact that people seem to be getting good results.  I do love the Leica 90-280 - but I do wish it was a bit lighter and longer reach.  The Sigma seemed to be a good solution, even though slower.

This is a blackthroat which came to feed every day. Sigma 100-400 at 400mm, Panasonic S1R. I cropped quite a bit, but this appears not to be a problem. The lens is plenty sharp and the stablilization is effective. I missed some shots as the autofocus landed on the coconut - I should have used animal detection I guess.

Interesting thread .

I`ve just returned a Pany 70 -200/4 (first time that I`ve returned a lens in forty years) so I`m still looking for something with a longer reach for occasional use.

There`s no denying that there`s some lovely shots in this thread so it looks like I may need to take a gamble on the Sigma and see how it goes .

I`ve always been a bird watcher rather than a bird photographer but I do take the occasional shot and a longer full frame alternative to my M lenses would also be useful for the SL2S.

I couldn`t "justify" the Leica 90 -280 for my occasional usage and anyway its not long enough plus I`d prefer something lighter.

Food for thought .

By the way , thank you Rob  for the benefit of your experience re the Pany

Interesting: What were your main reasons to return the 70-200 f4?

Thanks

Daniel

Only one reason really and that was that the OOF areas were very harsh .

I tried to ignore it thinking that I`d work my way around it but ....

Others commented on it as well so it wasn`t just me .

It seemed sensible to return the product within the 30 days allowed and have a rethink .

I`m still thinking  :)

I was one the 100-400 bashers as my copy on loan from Sigma was showing very soft images especially at 400mm f6.3 and further that say 15-20m.

I returned the lens very dissapointed and expressed my dissapointment but also pointed them to this forum to see how others can produce great images with similar set-ups.

The lens I had on loan was loaned out to another person who also said the lens was soft & missing focus.

The lens was taken into the service dept where they found the lens to be defective!

For now I am shooting with a Nikon D7500 and a Nikon 200-500 with stellar results, I'm delighted.

What a pity my first impression was distorted by a faulty lens, however, some other users here have expressed their dissapointment with this lens so maybe a QC issue?
