setuporg Posted July 11, 2020 Share #41 Posted July 11, 2020 Advertisement (gone after registration) As I went back in time and got the M9M after M10M (to complement the initial M246), it was instructive to backtest this forum, looking for contemporaneous M246 expectations as the M9M successor. I was interested in the expectations of what would improve the pioneering M9M. They were wild, imagining anything EVF and other wild changes. And of course the progress was incremental and predictable. However, the performance of M246 with Live View and increased ISO range was a dramatic advance. The M10M is a new platform change, but besides that, it's the resolution and a dramatic ISO increase. Now, the platform stays the same. And just like that, my hunch is we're only getting a higher-res sensor. Overall it's fun to read wild expectations and see realistic advances.
Advertisement Posted July 11, 2020 Posted July 11, 2020 Hi setuporg, Take a look here M10-R full specifications and photos. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Jeff S Posted July 11, 2020 Share #42 Posted July 11, 2020 M10-R presumably designates high resolution M10. So, no mystery, especially after the M10 Monochrom introduced a higher resolution M10 sensor. Bigger changes would have warranted a different generation, the M11 or other new platform designation. But the timing for that never seemed likely given the recent 4+ year release cycle (M10 from Jan, 2017). Leica can surprise, but this sensor change has been telegraphed for some time (Nicci reported it here 6 months ago). Jeff

It's a relief that Leica doesn't pay much attention to all the desired improvements written here. They sell everything they can be produce so we have the safety of "don't kill the goose that lays the golden egg" and a little complacency. 2 1

EVF and IBIS are outside of an M.

EVF and IBIS are outside of an M. I wouldn’t rule out anything from Leica. Forum opinion was skewed heavily against the likelihood and desire for both a screen-less M as well as a monochromatic M, each now praised by many of those same naysayers. And we know that Leica has experimented (unsuccessfully so far) with different/hybrid M viewing systems. Technology proceeds in unexpected ways. Dr. Kaufmann recently told Hugh Browstone that Leica will be unveiling some industry changing developments in coming months (not necessarily M related), so innovation and tradition can coexist, as current product variants already attest. I should also note that many made similar comments about sticking a sensor inside an M in lieu of film. Turns out that technology and innovation just needed to catch up. And those models still coexist (so far). Jeff
Guest Posted July 11, 2020 Share #48 Posted July 11, 2020 The battery life argument is like many others. For some people including myself [m262 user] the luxury of not having to worry about battery life is very important for others its no big deal. Regarding the level gauge for tripod work i have always used a spirit level bubble mount in the hot shoe mount even with my olympus which had one incorporated into the camera. For me battery life and a bubble mount spirit levels are massive priorities for my own photography. Different things are important to different people. Some companies like olympus just cram every feature anyone might want into the camera which i hate.
wlaidlaw Posted July 11, 2020 Share #49 Posted July 11, 2020 I never understand about folks whingeing about extra features being added, e.g. IBIS, sensor cleaning, spirit level. Don't like them - don't use them but don't be a dog in the manager for other folks who might like and use these features. I don't have steady hands due to 35 years of inflammatory arthritis and IBIS would be a great boon to me. I leave the level on the whole time I have a wide angle lens on my M240 and have a real spirit level on my M7 or R cameras, whenever I am using anything wider than 35mm. The downside, of course is that she's stuck shooting Canon. *********************** To no one in particular.... The M is the last remaining *anti-technology* camera. Sure it's digital but that's hardly new tech anymore. The M is the camera that celebrates its limitations. And those limitations are liberating for many. No AF, IBIS, built in EVF, zoom lenses, telephotos etc. That's what the SL is for. Even going to 40MP is pretty meh, compared to the 60MP available today. It's a conservative camera. Leica have spent decades bowing to pressure to make the M more versatile with dozens of add ons. EVF's bellows, lens adaptors, viewfinder, diopters, GPS grips etc. But the camera itself has always been without them. They did a bit of an experiment with video in the M240. It wasn't successful. Maybe they'll make an EVF camera that can take M lenses. That won't be an M though. An M is the lack of extras, not adding them. Hopefully there will always be an M. Gordon p.s. I was joking about the Canon thing, sort of.... 8

But it’s much smarter marketing to say that the focus is on “the essentials”. Jeff

Wilson I'd gladly welcome IBIS. I'd gladly welcome some sort of focus alignment recognition technology or built in EVF. I'd prefer to maintain the OVF but have some way to eliminate rangefinder mis-alignment (without an adapted EVF). 3

Agreed...You can get those "improvements" right now for far less money from Canon, Nikon, etc. If the Leica M was 'upgraded' (?) to match, the ONLY reason to buy a Leica would be for the bragging rights..."I have an 8000 dollar Leica around my neck and you only have a 2800 dollar Nikon Z7 around yours!" Torontoamateur Posted July 12, 2020 Share #60 Posted July 12, 2020 I am struggling with the decision of selling my m240 and getting this new M10-R. What will the real advantage be? Please note the size of the M10 did not persuade me to get one of those. My basic print size is 13"x19". What advantage will I experience ? You see the difference is $4,000 at least for this change.
