erl Posted September 25, 2022 Share #262 Posted September 25, 2022 5 hours ago, farnz said: JD, Just to explain the significance of the compass, Erl and some other forum members and I were on a weekend in Venice, Italy in 2010. Erl lives in Melbourne, Australia, and he was using his map and compass to guide 2 or 3 of us through the tangled back streets to our hotels. We'd had a 'chilled refreshment or two' for dinner but, weirdly, the map appeared to be wrong. We knew which direction we were supposed to be walking in thanks to Erl's compass but we weren't finding the landmarks we were expecting. Erl couldn't quite fathom it either because he regularly relied on compasses and maps to find his way around in Aussie and in other countries. Eventually we worked out that the compass was sending us in the wrong direction when we compared it with the compasses in our in mobile phones. That's when we discovered that the other end of the compass needle is coloured in compasses that are made in the southern hemisphere so that the needle points south instead of north. This called for further 'chilled refreshments' to make up for walking round in circles before continuing on to our hotels. 😇 Erl retired his compass when I met him in Melbourne in 2017 and he very kindly donated it to me as a memento, which I still carry with me as a keepsake. Hence my pointing it out in the picture. It still keeps perfect time. Pete. A little further illumination is in order here. Under strange circumstances (complicated) I had had my Swiss Army Knife confiscated at an airport. I had posted on the forum to that effect and Farnz obliged by presenting me with another (a whopper! & it gets daily use). This took place in Kyoto during the Challenge. In response I felt Pete deserved the opportunity to give my compass another life. My ulterior motive was twofold. First, it was my furtive attempt to "lead him astray" on future Challenges. Second, I know no better person than Farnz to ' wind anything up!' Hence, its incredible time keeping ability. 😂 2

But the doctor didn’t say I couldn’t take photos. And since I know the rules specify Leica camera, here’s a bonus from a while back. A handheld selfie with my oldest Leica lens, the Hektor f:2.5/5cm My specimen has no serial No. so it might have initially belonged to a Leica Ia. On the other hand it is chrome plated which would actually indicate a later production lot. Anyway the performance is amazingly good for an approximately 90 year old lens. This picture was taken at open aperture f:2.5 and is straight out of cam without any further optimization! I used it on a Sony A9 with Techart LM-EA7 adapter (autofocus) and with the FIKUS hood.
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! The "work" was finished on the left half and still pending on the right half. This was in preparation for some (hopefully) minor surgery. Having worn a moustache for more than forty years, I reckoned that posterity urgently needed a visual documentation of the transition. Actually, I was quite unprepared to seeing my own mouth after all those years, even knowing that I must have had one at some point in time P.S. it turned out well. I am writing this post op, being in dire need for the time to pass. Please forgive me for the preposterous wording. please forgive me as well for the spelling, as I am writing this on my phone .
farnz Posted November 29, 2022 Share #280 Posted November 29, 2022 (edited) I'm glad to hear that your surgery turned out well and I feel sure that Regina is looking after you very well. My best wishes for the remaining surgery too. 🙂 Pete. Edited November 29, 2022 by farnz
