After fiddling with a lot of Leica Glass my go to lens is the 24mm Summilux.

I cant replace it and I use it for everything imaginable.

Its a real Leica underdog.

Not good for Architecture.

Not good for portraits.

To expensive.

To heavy.

But I think all the opposite.

I heard it was going to be discontinued for good ? Is that so?

That will be a real pitty.

Out airing my new 24mm Summilux. This is what you can find in the woods in Sweden.

some argue it's an unorthodox lens in Leica history with really beats me "really! by the book?".  a classic example like kenrockwell.com I think he's full of it.  many favorite 24mm most when using a 24-70 zoom SLR lens.  ha.

I bought this lens base on calculates... I probably am crazy.

This is my dear: Elmarit 24, for better or for worse till death do us part and my son will take care for her. At that time Leica made strange hood constructions, which the Summicron 28 asph 1 also was victimized by. Strange enough it annoys me not as much (after repair) as the first 28 asph.

I think this church is in Lecce, but I could be mistaken for another beauty in Puglia.

Is that a millennia-old runic inscription or a modern homage?

Hi James, This is the real thing. Viking age 750-1050 AC. Around Stockholm, Uppsala they are quite common. Often with some small information signs describing what story the runic inscription tells about. At the time of the vikings they were often placed near the shore of the sea, but with land raising you now often find them quite deep in the woods.

I have the 24 Elmarit which I love. I also have a 35 Summilux FLE with which I am not comfortable although this is a very nice sharp lens , compact and useful for a single lens go out. However that 35 stays at home most of the time, I do not feel the 35 view angle. I just happen to have the possibility to swap it by adding some moderate cash against a 24 Lux. I do not want to separate from the 24 Elmarit though. Do you think having the two 24's is crazy ?

Two 24 < one 50, so, no.  If more than a single copy of a favorite focal length is crazy then you are asking a group of lunatics.

Nope! Only have the Elmarit myself. But I guess these two offer quite different opportunities & experiences. Wanting two 24´s along with only one 50 is kind of special I guess. A 35 would obviously be my choice. But then again it tells me that you both love and also really know how to handle the 24 focal length. Brilliant 😁

I'm half way through watching this. Alan Schaller is keen on 24mm.

Pete

Thanks for pointing to this. Very interesting. Obviously I am not him and just the lens is not going to make it but maybe there is something in being consistent with the focals that most fit to our vision rather than covering a wider range of focals just in case, as darylgo has mentined.

Hello. Hope everybody is doing well. I have a question about the 24 hello. Hope everybody is doing well. I have a question about the 24mm Elmarit.  I loved it on my M9-p and now love it on my M10-p. Question is. Should the lens barrel have any give to it? In other words, I felt the barrel today as I was taking the lens off the camera, and in the middle of the lens there is some give to the top half if you turn it in a screwing position.

Given the situation with COVID-19, I don’t think I’ll be sending it in for cleaning lube and checking for sometime. I don’t want to get it back in 10 years LOL. It’s still extremely sharp, nothing beats it, and it is not in danger of coming apart at the middle.  I am simply concerned about it. However, if it’s normal, that’s great.. I don’t seem to recall it happening before today though, though I could be wrong .

best, Mark

The 24Elmar is really a very good lens. I love the combo 24+50mm.

It's a wonderful lens I guess, with almost no distortion. And I agree with you the combo 24-50 is awesome. I don't like the 28, the 35 is my standard wide angle lens. But below the 35, I skip directly to the 24.

One day I'll get one

I came to read this post again. It's interesting that you like the 24/1.4. I bought it in June but rarely use it. Maybe it's difficult for composing. Did you use EVF or mounting it on SL? Thanks.

Dear Schittra. I have been using the 24  Summilux exclusively as one lens one camera combination in the last 6 weeks. It is a choice, as I wanted to use it continuously to understand the lens and its operation under different user conditions. It requires some time investment. During all this time I rarely used the EVF. It slows down the operation a bit and also is not showing the extra space around as in the RF. This said, I used rather the leica 24 viewfinder continuously. I have used the EVF to test the behaviour under different light conditions and understand the interaction between light meter and the lens. Also , for specific landscape with precise framing and tricky light the EVF is very useful. For general use, the A mode with +0.7 exposure compensation gives pretty good results, sometimes needing a bit more PP. Several of my pictures can be seen in the Travel and Landscape and Street forum under Life is a beach. Your judgment.

The use of the 24 mm is a bit like restricting your photography with a Monochrom. It is a personal choice and puts you in a different universe than the "normal" lenses. It is restrictive till you develop a special creativity in that new world.
