Wow it's a cool idea, thanks for sharing, but I don't think I want to carry that monstrosity with me outdoors.

Probably investing extra $1,500 and getting used or open box APO-Macro-Elmarit-TL 60mm f/2.8 ASPH. be better solution for me.

😅 without the APO-Extender-R 2x.
CL + R 100 is the same size as CL + TL 60 with lens hood.

Only weight differs. IQ is stellar in both case.

TL 60 is easy to use in AF mode. But in MF it is a nightmare.
R 100 is made for MF, and it works perfectly with the CL.

My real complaint about TL 60 is the lack of focus distance and depth of field scale. You have to use it with T/TL/TL2 to get a virtual one.

Another advantage about R 100 : it will be fully usable in full frame with SL2. Instead of relying in APS-C mode only. Which is fine of course. But R 100 can also be used in cropped mode to get more reach.

I have both the Macro-Elmarit-R 60mm f/2.8 (ca 1988 version, perfect condition for $550 or so) along with its Macro Adapter-R extension tube (about $50) for the 2:1 to 1:1 focusing range. Superb performer in every way. And I have the Macro-Elmar-R 100mm f/4 in short mount with the Focusing Bellows-R (about $450 complete); another superb performing lens for macro work down to 1:1 magnification (and the bellows is usable with most of my other R lenses, 50mm and up, as well). I found ELPRO close up sets for the series VII lenses available for $60 and an ELPRO VIb for about $35 (impressive close up performance for a close up lens!).

I don't use the Leica R Adapter L; I use the Leica M Adapter L which I've had since I had the SL body, and the Leica R Adapter M, which I've had since I had the M-P 240 body. Although pricey, they work perfectly, give me access to all of Leica's lens profiles, and provide the best ergonomics on the CL body. (I don't own any TL or SL lenses at this point, use R and M lenses on the CL almost exclusively, so mount adapters are essential to my use of the camera.)

I have the 55-135. After 3 weeks, and before the end of the "trial" I was about to return it. Then, I sort of figured it out. It takes a while to get the setting right for focus, and then it's awesome.

Please share!   I have the 55-135 but thusfar have only had time to try it out once.

Another vote for the Macro-Elmarit-R 60/2.8 (11347) that i use with stacked M to L (18771) and R to M (14642) Leica adapters. The lens is recognized by the digital CL and i prefer its equiv. focal length of 90mm to the 150mm equiv. of 100mm R lenses. Makes also an elegant combo with the digital CL although i prefer the compactness of M lenses on the Macro-Adapter-M for proxiphoto.

Summilux-M 50 asph with Macro-Adapter-M is outstanding for macro work. But it is rather unpleasant to use : have to mount the adapter, then lose infinity focus. Then you have to guess which the new translated distance is.

My favorite for proxiphoto is the Elmar-M 50/2.8. Here on full frame (Sony A7s mod) with the Macro-Adapter-M.

To sum up :

If one plans to use a full frame L-mount  body one day. You will be better with one of R macro lenses. To reach 1:1 use Macro-Adapter-R or Elpro or APO-Extender-R 2x
For occasional use, one can be pleased with M lenses and Elpro 52.
Macro-Adapter-M is too cumbersome. But it is awesome with Macro-Elmar-M 90mm (live view version)

If one needs to scan its negatives. APO-Macro-Elmarit-TL 60 is the best tool ! It works flawlessly for that. APS-C is the best format for 35mm film Scan.

Just put in mind that if you are used to APO-Macro-TL 60 IQ, you will not be pleased with Macro-R 60 one. TL is really better.
However APO-Macro-R 100 matched TL 60 IQ.

Matter of tastes. It takes little room in the bag and replaces a macro lens for proxiphoto. I won't carry my R 60/2.8 for travels but the Macro-Adapter-M will always be in the bag and not necessarily with the 90/4 macro.

Thanks, Phil. "Live view version" of which: the lens or the adapter? And do you know the serial number of that make.

Hi Ken

11670 Macro-Elmar-M 90mm is the live view version to be used with 14652 Macro-Adapter-M. You can reach 1:2 ratio and keep infinity focus altogether

11629 Macro Set, is the older version for rangefinder use : you get older Macro-Elmar-M 90mm + angled viewfinder + goggled Macro-Adapter. It reach only 1:3 and you lose infinity focus. It is even more cumbersome than Macro-Adapter-M used with other M lenses.

The main difference with older and newer version, is that you can use the newer one even if it is not retracted with Macro-Adapter-M. The aperture ring is different. The older one, has to be retracted to change aperture. Hence it is not possible to use conveniently with Macro-Adapter-M

However, the older version has a secondary distance scale on the other side until 1:3. Because you have to mount it in reverse on the goggled adapter.

Newer version is still rangefinder coupled in normal use. But it loses coupling when mounted with Macro-Adapter-M, hence the so called live view version. They are optically identical.

TL-60 is way better than this 90mm.

Thanks so much for all this, Phil. Everything I've seen of the TL60 is incredible. I think it's the best of all the TL lenses. The 90 still interests me because: 1. possible to get at a discount on ebay; 2. its small size and 3. because I am now only buying lenses that might eventually go on a FF to full advantage.

best and thanks,

Ken

You are right full frame only. I will sell soon my TL 35mm. Excellent lens. But I want to be able to use at full potential any full frame cameras in the future.

Alas, yes. If Leica would give us an idea of what the CL2 will look like, I might think otherwise. But everything's a secret until it's about to be sprung. I can only extrapolate from the M10M that Leica still has a few tricks up its sleeve!

Looking at Q2 ; SL2 ; M10 Monochrom and rumoured M10-R.
I think that CL2 will be very compelling and grant us our best wishes.

In a contracting market. You have to release very worthwhile update. Look at what Fuji done with its X100 V, biggest upgrade ever for the line up.

Half baked upgrade will drive you to bankruptcy.

a very compelling point, Phil. I suppose Sony, with deepest pockets and corporate protection, can just churn out A7r-whatever-Roman-numeral forever. But the niche companies have to defend their position by offering substantially different releases. Thanks for the insight. Ken

Leica should drop TL line.
Resurrect X3, like that no need for a tiny CL2

Making CL2 a little bit bigger to accommodate IBIS and Q2/SL2 battery and weather sealing. Is better

That would be a real winner! If the M lines continues to improve in exciting ways, it would have nothing to fear from such a camera.

I would be very please to buy an X3.
TL 18 is not good enough and CL is small enough. And this lens is a 28mm equivalent lens. We do not need two 28mm cameras (counting Q/Q2)

X3 has to be a modern version of X2 based on CL tech.
X typ 113 was a bad mistake : way too be big for a compact camera.
