SL2 AF half-press blurs EVF

I have been noticing that Leica SL2 blurs the EVF when I half press the shutter. Is this happening with everyone and is there any news on if they will address this issue in the upcoming firmware update? Thanks a lot!

Same thing happens with Q2... pretty sure it's normal for the SL2 (although not a good normal). Playback is CRYSTAL sharp. Is that what you are noticing??

Yes indeed, there’s a noticeable blur the moment you press focus then the playback is tack sharp, I have seen people discuss this in the forum but could not locate it again.. so I decided to ask around

Yeah it only happens with auto focus. It does not happen with M lenses

I don't see this in AFS mode. What I have noticed is that in AFC mode there's a slight blurriness as the focus constantly re-adjusts, which would be normal.

Are you seeing this in both AFS & AFC modes?

It should be less in AFs mode, as the AF will not be hunting all the time.

Mine does this. And as soon as I release the half press, the image in the finder is sharp. I have been trusting the green in focus indication and have had a pretty much 100% keeper rate. On a somewhat related note, I have left my pre-focus on up to now. I have always turned it off with my Sony cameras. With the SL2, I can hear the lens adjusting focus, but can’t see anything happening in the viewfinder. Even if I pan to a closer or farther away subject. With the Sony’s, I could always see the camera adjusting focus in the viewfinder, actually very annoying, so I shut it off. Also to save battery.

Same with mine momentary blur annoying but I'm getting used to it  would prefer it didn't.

I have the problem only in AF-C and far away objects I want to have in focus. It's just because of the hunting of the af system.

In AFC you live with it. It’s the DFD system at work.

In AFS you can turn off pre-focus and not use 120FPS for the viewfinder. Both make the EVF *slightly* blurrier for me. You’ll also save some battery.

Well I am glad to read that I am not the only one experiencing this issue after asking on the SL2 Facebook group and getting nothing back. But I am not happy that there appears to be nothing to do to prevent it or fix it. I’m baffled by some people’s willingness to just accept it... from a $6000 state of the art camera? Loss of focus just as I am making final composition and timing decisions.  It’s infuriating me.

So you would rather not have focus readjust the shot before you take it?

Yes, of course. I would rather see that my shot is tack sharp on not rely on a green light that's not close to 100% accurate. On Pro Nikons and Canons , pros are use to seeing when the AF miss focuses. Blurring the viewfinder is , distracting, not useful and irritating. I understand that's how the system works now, but it hopefully will be corrected in the future. Those that rely on total automation and  not their eyesight will not understand how pros were use to working prior to electronic viewfinders. AF is a welcome aid, but the photographer should be able to see clearly that his subject is in perfect focus before tripping the shutter. Many of us prefer to not be only a green light photographer!

The blur indicates that the image is out of focus. The only thing the EVF does is showing you the readout of the sensor. And yes, an out of focus image is distracting, not useful and irritating. So, the blur disappears as the camera focuses. When you are focusing manually you go from blur to sharp as well, even if you are a pro. And yes, like the photographer on an optical SLR viewfinder, the SL focuses the image before it trips the shutter. What a surprise 🙄

its annoying, apparrantly its much more noticeable on the SL2 cos of the 47mp, doubt a firmware fix could solve it

It is defiantly an issue with SL2, that is not normal or expected behavior. I am hopeful that a FW update will address this.

No, you're confusing "blur" with insufficient viewfinder resolution. On the SL2 while trying to AF,  the electronic viewfinder lowers the resolution to the point that its not possible to see if the camera AF, "correctly", focused. Thats a HUGE!!! disadvantage .. With optical viewfinders one can easily and correctly tell when the camera AF has not focused correctly   Therefore not to press the shutter or quickly re- focus.  The SL2 green AF confirmation light is no where close to 100% accurate. Neither is the Nikon. But at least with an Optical viewfinder you can see when it.s OOF rather than "after the fact". There are probably technical reasons why this happens,  (and hopefully correctable one day), but it's a problem in fast moving situations. I know in a split second when my Nikon mis AF, but only after review with the SL2.

This is exactly what I have been seeing. I spent an entire evening shooting an event for my wife and never knew if my images were in focus or not until I got home and looked at the files.
