I should also mention I have a R to M adaptor (currently used to mount an Elmarit R 180 on my M10). Any recommended (and attainable) R mount 28s I should consider? Again, I already lug around the 180, a 90 summicron-M v1 (e48), and a 50/1 Noctilux, so weight isn’t an issue.

I see that you like R lenses as am I.

This 28mm PC-Super-Angulon is a must my favorite since my Leica R days.

Second old is the first 28mm Elmarit-R this one that I have in "safari" and very classic rendering and used with M light and easy with great results focussing can be hard on M + Viso 020, as very long focus throw ring.

The Elmarit-R 28/2.8 v1 referred to by a.noctilux produced smeared corners on my Canon 5D1 but the second version of this lens (11333 or similar 11259 with no ROM contacts) worked fine on that same body. Never tried it on any M camera though.

Yes, of course. If f/2.8 suffices, an Elmarit-R is nice enough. Mine seems to be an 11204, which accepts the 12509 hood, and Series VII filters. The hood retains the filter, as the lens is not threaded for filters. Distortion seems quite low.

Edited to add: I did not succeed in being able to post a sample

Actually my copy of Elmarit-R 28mm #11206 has E48 thread in which I put an E49 to E48 adapter to use more common E49 filters

(opposed to E48 or Series VII ).

Interesting. Well, perhaps mine has filter threads, and I remembered incorrectly. I shall take a look, in a moment.

I recently acquired a Summaron 28. Very much enjoy its rendering and field of view compared to the 35 which it replaced. With this discovery that I visually prefer 28 to 35 (and 24) on the wider side, I would like to eventually augment the Summaron with a faster 28 for situations (e.g. dusk and indoors) where the Summaron is not optimal. A 1.4 is not necessary per se (just faster than 5.6) although I have no weight restrictions. One more quirky preference is I am not a fan of focus tabs. Are there any fast(er) 28s of any vintage of Leica, Zeiss, or CV sans focus tabs? If not, so be it; I’d still like to get a faster lens.

Have a look at reviews of, and user reports on the Zeiss 28mm f/2.8 ZM. The cost is relatively low, and the focusing tab is quite subtle. I do not have one, but do have other ZM lenses: 4,5/21mm Biogon C, 1,4/35mm Distagon, and 4/85mm Tele-TESSAR.

The Zeiss 25mm ZM is worth a look, too, probably being a better lens than its 28mm cousin.

I'd recommend the 28 Elmarit R v2 , loving it on the SL 601!

I was just about to suggest the CV 28/1.9, which is a very good lens at an appealing price.  It's okay wide open but won't offer the same wide open performance as fast Leica lenses but that's to be expected in my opinion.  Naturally if stopped down its performance improves as one would expect.

The major plus for you, I expect, would be that its pictures have a classic slightly low-contrast look that will complement the pictures from your Summaron.

Pete.

Caissa, funny that I don't read KR for years.

The link may be better choosen, sorry for that.

The link is only for the OP to see how the M-Hexanon 28mm looks like, the only 28mm lens without focus tab that I know of

I don't have a picture of the lens to share, even if I do use this nice lens for decade (s).

Fear not. I only read KR for entertainment and the lens pictures. 🙂

Thank you for the suggestion. It is true I prefer the lower contrast, older lens rendering style although I do occasionally enjoy the 50mm Summilux ASPH (black chrome - no focus tab of course). I found a reasonably priced 1.9 Ultron and will give that a go. I haven’t used any non-Leica glass on my M so that should be an interesting change as well. At some point, I’ll give up on my odd no focus tab requirement and get a faster Leica 28 too but no hurry.

I find the Elmarit-M 28mm Asph (f 2.8) very attractive (excellent IQ). It is very light and affordable.   But I did not buy it, yet. Since many years I'm using the predecessor (Elmarit version 4, which is not aspherical, yet. But somehow it was always good enough, though a little bit bigger.)

Earlier this year I sold my tiny Elmarit 28 Asph. as I found it a little too contrasty and even harsh sometimes. Very soon after I was lucky to find a rather bashed-about but optically perfect Elmarit-M v4 very cheaply and I love its rendering; as it's slightly bigger than the Asph I find its handling better, AND it's the perfect size for my SL as well so a win all round. I don't use a hood on it as it never seems to flare.

I sometimes fantasise about having the Summilux, but even if I could afford it it would be an indulgence - with its size I'm sure I wouldn't use it enough to justify the cost.

Could not agree more... similar story to mine! Never liked the asph for the same reasons... and find the v4 to have just the right blend of everything 😀👍
