budjames Posted March 3, 2021 Share #82  Posted March 3, 2021 I told myself that I wouldn’t do it. But I did. I’m on the waiting list for the new APO Summicron 35mm as of today. I love shooting with my APO Summicron 50mm on my M10-R, so I could not resist. insideline Posted March 3, 2021 Share #86  Posted March 3, 2021 (edited) 8 hours ago, calijax said: Word of a 30cm mfd sounds interesting...  I have the launch release and the 30cm shortest focus capability will require the user to move past a firm stop on the focus barrel at 70cm, then go to live view to enable the down to 30cm shortest focus capabilities as the rangefinder obviously is unable to focus patch that close. This is a 3 Aspherical lens corrected to very high standards utilizing "special glass materials" and from what Leica states in their release will set a new bench mark for an "M" body manual focus lens capabilities when it is measured against the level of performance already contained in the 50 M F2 APO. Will this resolve to the levels of the SL 35 APO, hard to know at this point, but with the SL 50 APO out-resolving the M 50 APO version this "may" help us understand where to set our initial expectations pre real world tests. Yet given the wonderful small size and all mechanical construction along with manual focus along with a $8195 suggested retail price this may well be another in a line of a lens to buy, use and enjoy for decades of mechanical use and countless wonderful photographs. Leica is touting "unparalleled" image quality in the release, so possibly at the 35mm focal length which in general terms is easier to obtain the finest optics given the more open F2 aperture means this has the potential to be a lens that rivals the stellar but far too large 35mm SL APO, and may even set a bench mark for a new Leica 35mm focal length M or SL lens from any era. I know I am feeling the desire and almost certainty to sell a few of my older collector M lenses to acquire it. Kwesi Posted March 3, 2021 Share #88 Â Posted March 3, 2021 Now that there are 2 new versions of the 35/2, I wonder if the 50/2 v5 will finally be updated.

Stephen.s1 Posted March 3, 2021 Share #91  Posted March 3, 2021 I'll be interested in it's comparison to the new V 35/f.2 Lanthar... Mine'll be on it's way to me in a few days. $1000 vs 7400 Euros.

The update to the Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH happened when this lens was the ONLY 35mm f/2 lens in the M lens range. Now that the Apo-Summicron-M 35mm will become part of the M lens range, you won't see any further update to the Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH. And the same is true for the Summicon 50mm. It was and is a superb lens, bettered only by the Apo-Summicron-M 50mm, so why on earth should Leica update the cheaper lens, thus decreasing demand for the better, more expensive lens? Nope, that won't happen.

They can do whatever people demand. If there is enough demand for an updated Summicron (after the discontinuation of the Summarit line), and demand shifts away from the 50 APO, they will make it.

I have locked the older ones and discussion can move to the one started by Steve, who actually has the lens and sharing results with it. Â
