Should I upgrade my lenses from 2.8 to 1.4 ? (GAS problem)

Hi

I shoot mostly street and travel photography (my kids won't stand still or pose anymore). I've acquired a fairly big collection of lenses since I started with the M series more than 20 years ago and just sold some medium format equipment - I'm considering using that money to upgrade a 21/2.8 or a 28/2.8 to the 1.4 Summilux version. Wondering if it's worth it. My favorite lens is my 35/1.4 if that helps. Also looking at the 24/1.4 (I don't have a 24mm lens currently).

I should probably use the money to have my head examined, but that ship has sailed a long time ago. ;-)

First,  I shoot urban landscape and some street.  I had the 21lux and sold it for the 21 sem.  Love that.  small sharp, the 21lux 1.4 was not needed at all and I hated its size.  I have the 28lux, love that. Still on the big side, but 1.4 is much more usable for that focal length.

GAS can be cured only after buying what you want/need ...

No other choice 😉

Do you shoot at f1.4 much when doing street/travel?

There's your answer!

So I'm just going to put this money in the bank ? There has to be something I can convince myself I need ! I convinced myself that I needed the medium format gear in the first place. 🙂

I have a few suggestions........

Send the money to me, after all I've saved you from spending it on something you don't need!

Donate it to charity and enjoy the feelgood factor.

Spend it on a trip somewhere new where you can use the gear you already own to take some great street shots.

Go to a casino, put it all on red and if you win get yourself a new 'free' lens. See above as to what to do with the original stake.

Buy a Q2 and enjoy a different shooting experience.

If you like street photography I would think that f2.8 would be easier to focus than f1.4

How often would you need to use f1.4 ?

You could buy a couple of extra f2.8 lenses for the price of an f1.4

On the other hand I have been looking at some f1.4 lenses when I have perfectly good f2 and f2.8 lenses.

In general, I almost always recommend people buy the fastest lens they can even at 24mm. There is always the option to use a Summilux lens at F2, f2.8, F4 etc. But you can't use a Summicron at 1.4 and trust me there will be times you want the small DOF look even if to add some variety to your work.

OTOH some of the APO Summicrons reach such a high level of performance and price, some may never GAS for a faster lens again.

Give it some time. I liked the Q variant. f/1.4 for street is difficult. But then - maybe you start trying this look once you have the that lens. Rather than thinking about how you photograph today, maybe think about what type of images attracts you or what type of shooting would you like. I enjoyed the Q a lot and its wide AF in street situations worked very well. I sold it eventually to concentrate more on the M line, as I have other AF cameras as well.

If you’re selling your medium format gear, are you consolidating your M system?  Is that your plan?  Sounds like a good idea, if you’re rationalising.

This question comes up a lot, and the early responses are invariably “you don’t need a [noctilux / summilux / insert alternative here] “  Frankly, this is not about need.  I like Peter Karbe’s comment - aperture is for depth of field.  Contrary to a lot of advice here, I have found that lenses are about “fingerprint” as much as speed.   The modern, aspeherical Summiluxes and Summicrons have a very different feel to older lenses - it’s more than just speed.

They do tend to be large - the days of small, fast M lenses seem to be behind us (see pre-aspherical 35 Summilux).

In your position (I’ve been there before), I’d recommend you look at your images, see which focal lengths you like the most, and which lenses you like, then think about getting rid of the focal lengths you don’t use, then decide what core focal lengths you want.  At that point, read up on the Summiluxes, Summicrons and Elmarits here and look at other people’s images posted in the photo forums.  You might not want all your lenses to be fast, modern lenses.

I have the 21 Summilux ASPH, and while I like it, it is a beast, and the SEM is smaller and apparently better.  I don’t use 24mm, preferring 28mm (I have the 28 Summaron-M and 28 Summilux, having never got on with the Summicron).  The modern Summiluxes are lovely, but many older lenses are also special (75 Summilux, 35 Summilux pre-aspherical and any number of the older 50s).

I hope that helps.

...for street, I wouldn’t switch to lux. Probably cron will be better when stopped down.

Thought that is not the answer you want, you want justification for the gas.

I solved mine, bought all lux, apo and noctilux available. Some cron too. Problem solved.
