I should also note that the S1R and SL2 have higher magnification viewfinders than the other cameras I own. The VF in the SL2 and S1R are simply larger.

What I suspect though, is that the that the scaling from the magnification and the EVF don't quite work properly, just like watching low res content on some 4K televisions or looking at files at 400% on your computer screen. The lower res finders are doing less scaling to get that magnified image to view and appear more crisp. The SL doesn't magnify to the same extent so it doesn't have the issue either. I suspect that was a deliberate decision to avoid this very conversation.

If I stop one level short of the maximum then I think there's nothing I couldn't easily find critical focus on. I did a few very quick tests between my Z7 and SL2 with the same M lens (CV 50mm 1.2) and noticed no real world differences in hit rate or acquisition speed.

Exactly what I pointed out. I feel this is a big fuss about nothing and exactly what you would expect from taking a tiny bit of the image on the sensor and sticking it on a high resolution screen to view it.

Here’s my shot of the EVF during live view magnification and during playback magnification.  It’s not that bad here.  I wonder if it only happens due to certain setting effects.  We may all be right and wrong of course on this topic! I checked this last night and I had trouble focusing MF on my son eating, but tonight it didn’t feel bad.  this was with an adapted 90 Cron pre ASPH, with an iPhone 11 Pro Max taking the pic of the EVF.  I’m about 8 ft from the test chart.

the first shot is in live view, second in playback.  The SL2 live view magnifies more than playback.

Happy to report the following:

I have firmware 1.0. - the instore 'update' to be supplied when purchasing camera is all about making the camera 'work beter' with FOTOS> I have no interest in FOTOS so I didn't bother. Expect a significant update of firmware in January.

I do not have any 'grainy' mush when I look through viewfinder at any magnification using a Leica M - Adaptor  T and a 50 Summilux asph.

However - I can't seem to figure out how to get focus peaking to work - any thoughts on this?

When using focus peaking on the α7R III, the Z7, and the SL2, it’s advisable to take three pictures in a row as one moves the focus ring slightly.  Focus peaking is equally ‘reliable’ on all three cameras.  I had many shots with the α7R III and M lenses where I thought I knew where the focus point was only to find out later that it was off.  With the SL2, moving the focus ring ever so slightly moves the focus peaking indication.  That’s perfect.  Like Gordon, I stop one level short of maximum magnification and then I take three shots.

The resolution drop doesn’t seem like too big of a deal here.  When in playback mode, if you zoom in all the way on an image, the picture appears first in low resolution and then takes about a second to refresh into higher resolution.  That initial low-resolution level image is exactly what the magnified live view appears to be.

DPreview had an issue with it I believe because it was used to photograph people’s faces.  My theory with this issue is that human vision is very sensitive to faces, thus even a slight change (here a drop in resolution) will cause to leave a disproportionate reaction/memory.  I noticed the resolution issue when photographing my son last night; however, when testing it today on a test chart, it didn’t seem like a big deal at all.

Make sure you turn on focus peaking in the display settings/ profile 1-4 Settings menu, One of the profiles in profiles 1-4 has to have it on, then you can switch to that profile with the FN button when in live view or playback.  Each profile is a set of display settings on the lcd and EVF view, like: grid bars, histogram, ex clipping, focus peaking, etc.

Thanks for pointing that out I actually went to the operating manual and sort of figured out how to make it work ...this profiles business seems unnecessary as a default mechanism - I couldn't understand why focus peaking wouldn't show up in viewfinder even though I had enabled it on main menu....

Well that explains a lot of why Fotos doesn't see my camera. When I picked my camera up it reported no update required. That was a glitch and I'll see if the store can do the update for me tomorrow night at the Alexandria launch.

Live view magnifies to 400%. Playback to 100%. Try live view at 100% (two stops back from max) and it looks fine as well.

I think the original SL did playback to 200% and lots mentioned it wasn't sharp at the highest magnification.

You probably now already, but to focus precisely with M lenses you have to open the aperture completely before focusing and close it back to intended aperture before taking picture.
