dummilux Posted November 12, 2019 Share #1 Posted November 12, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) My M9 kit was recently stolen and after going back and forth with my insurance adjusters they are sending me a check for a little over $10,000. What was stolen: M9 w/new sensor, zeiss 50mm 1.5 zm, zeiss 35mm 1.4 zm and leica 50mm Elmar-M I am almost sure I will get another M9 but am seriously considering upgrading to the M10. What would you do if you were in my situation? Stick with the M9? Upgrade to M10? Something else?
Advertisement Posted November 12, 2019 Posted November 12, 2019 Hi dummilux, Take a look here ~$10,000 - What should I get?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
a.noctilux Posted November 12, 2019 Share #2 Posted November 12, 2019 Hello, I'd go for M10 and Summarit-M 50mm to begin with then after a while, replace the lens ( ...or not ).
bags27 Posted November 12, 2019 Share #3 Posted November 12, 2019 Did you not know that there's a $10,000 initiation fee on this site, split equally to the first two people who respond to your post? 1
platypus Posted November 12, 2019 Share #4 Posted November 12, 2019 (edited) If you loved your M9 you will adore an M10. There is no risk of disappointment involved in upgrading, the M10 is simply perfection. Edited November 12, 2019 by platypus
a.noctilux Posted November 12, 2019 Share #5 Posted November 12, 2019 😂 I don't need another lens. 😇 Another idea is to buy one of Noctilux 50mm or Apo-Summicron-M 50mm asph., then use the camera body you want.
Jeff S Posted November 12, 2019 Share #6 Posted November 12, 2019 Smart to carry insurance. I would try the M10, rent or demo, and determine how it fit into my shooting and printing workflow. These types of decisions are personal and depend on needs and preferences... and possibly influenced by other gear owned. For b/w shooting, I’d find a Monochrom with new sensor. For that matter, I would only consider an M9 if it had new sensor and dealer (and possibly Leica) warranty. The M240/262 also produce fine pics. A lot comes down to small differences. evikne Posted November 12, 2019 Share #7 Posted November 12, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) You should also consider an M10-P, with the quiet shutter. Together with a 35 or 50mm Summilux you won’t need much else.
FrozenInTime Posted November 12, 2019 Share #8 Posted November 12, 2019 I’ve lost the will to carry and change lenses, so if I had to start over, I would be completely happy with just a M10-P with Voigtlander 40/1.2. and a TL2 with 18mm ( or a Ricoh GRIII )
a5m Posted November 13, 2019 Share #9 Posted November 13, 2019 M10 prices are coming down while M9 prices are holding steady. I'd get an M9 for now and upgrade later, and take the opportunity to get all Leica glass - 35 and 50 Summilux ASPH.
dummilux Posted November 13, 2019 Author Share #10 Posted November 13, 2019 It seems like most of you would take the chance to upgrade if the opportunity presented itself. I am cautious because I "upgraded" to the m240 at one point and went back to the M9 after a couple of months. I have also read somewhere that Leica is offering refurbished M9's. I loved how the 35mm 1.4 zm rendered but it was cumbersome.
jaapv Posted November 13, 2019 Share #12 Posted November 13, 2019 Coming from an M9 owner - Get the M10 and a Zeiss 35/1.4 and Summarit 75.

Jeff Thanks for your input. The insurance ordeal was remarkably painless. I was expecting the process to last months but they sent out the check within a week. Maxx71 Posted November 13, 2019 Share #14 Posted November 13, 2019 If you get the M9, you'll end up thinking a lot of how you should have gotten the M10. You know this to be inevitable.
LeicaR10 Posted November 13, 2019 Share #15 Posted November 13, 2019 (edited) Dummilux, Sorry to hear of your loss but now have excellent options. Based on my long Leica experience and agreement with Evikne in his post # 7, the M10-P would be the way to go. (To include asking the dealer for a Leica refurbished M10-P model known as a "Q" in dealer parlance (not the camera) thereby saving at times thousands for the Leica lens that you want to purchase. (Refurbished Leica camera bodies and lenses are like new and come with a Leica warranty) Depending on your genre of photography, the camera/lens decision is solely yours to make with all due respect to others offering advice. All Leica lenses are superb with each designed for specific purpose and rendering. Perhaps there is a Leica lens that your heart has lust. But before you open your wallet, I would suggest you either rent or go to a Leica dealer and test drive a M camera body you fancy and a couple of lenses, take some photographs, go home, work the images and see if the lens(es) render what you envisioned when you took the photograph. If still undecided, go do it again. Just be sure to take your own SD card. I have found many photographers suffer GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) that requires rehab. Unfortunately, most Leica photographers experience GAS relapse and require another stint in rehab. In reality, few are cured. Last, I am certain whatever you decide will be right for you. r/ Mark Edited November 13, 2019 by LeicaR10
