bayernfan Posted November 7, 2019 Share #26 Posted November 7, 2019 Time for me to consider the purchase of an SL1. You've gotta love what new-gen products do to last-gen pricing. 😉

If so, sadly, that kills it for me, and possibly a bunch of others as well. Sounds like the Fotos app is their "solution" to the problem they've had with tethering. Not sure that's a practical answer for the needs of a studio shooter. Time will tell. So my fears are allayed. This from Red Dot Forum... "Built around a 47MP CMOS sensor offering double the resolution of the SL, the SL2 features a speedy Maestro III processor, 5-axis in-body image stabilization, a top-of-the-line 5.76MP OLED EVF, larger and more detailed 3.2” touchscreen, updated Wi-Fi, dual UHS-II SD card slots, mutishot capability for enormous 187MP files, a USB 3.1 Type-C port for tethering and power, and some of the most impressive video specs yet from a hybrid mirrorless system. To name just a few. Let’s take a look at these in a bit more detail and see how the SL2 improves upon its predecessor." "USB 3.1 Type C An upgrade from the SL’s USB 3.0 port, the new standard reversible connector supports charging, power, data transfer and stable tethering to a Mac or Windows PC. You can even power the camera in the field using a small powerbank or even from a V-Mount battery using a USB tap." I'm in! The Canon big-megapixel sensors have "null" AA filters that split the light and recombine it. That's how they can offer versions with and without AA. You'll find an explanation here: https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/explore/product-showcases/cameras-and-lenses/high-resolution-eos-5ds-vs-5dsr/ I remember reading that Sony/Nikon sensors work the same way. I understand it's still being written (sort of like readme files for a software release), but it should be on-line on/before the 21st. It's possible you may not receive a printed manual with the camera, except maybe a print-to-order deal with the PDF.

Neither is probably enough less to be worth the trouble. And the shelves are not overflowing. But look at this in a year... Seems like there is a 10% import duty added the price, before any state taxes are applied in store. Beware gauging at the airport if you are considering buying in the EU and getting a refund. The agents will take a big fat fee off your refund. They also have a minimum fee, so if you are not careful the refund agent gets more out of the refund than you do. (Although that seems unlikely in the case of the SL2.)

I have purchased in the EU and then returned home. I received a 100% VAT rebate, as a credit card refund from the seller, by obtaining an export document from the customs officer at the airport from which I left the EU. The "VAT Refund" agents are in some different sort of business, and I would not recommend using them.
