The S1R has quite some AF modes as well. Things may improved with FW updates, but I cant say I am overly impressed with the S1R in this respect. SL2 might be better, remains to be seen. But I am not very optimistic... IBIS, optional LENR and 20 fps are positive surprises for me, and sufficient reasons to upgrade... I still believe if the Maestro III is really up to task, the AF can be reliable and a pleasure to use. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

SL2 is outsourced to an external Munich design studio. That may explain the difference in the user interface choice. The SL 4 button interface was borrowed from the S, which in turn was borrowed from Phase (back when there was a relationship). I wonder if moving away from the S interface says anything about the future direction of the S and/or its positioning as the ‘flagship’ Leica. Chaemono Posted November 6, 2019 Share #169 Posted November 6, 2019 (edited) "New Leica Object Detection AF...automatically detects whether a subject is stationary or in motion, and subsequently switches between motion and focus priority." This doesn't sound like Panasonic tech to me. The question is, how does the camera detect motion in order to switch modes? caissa Posted November 6, 2019 Share #172 Posted November 6, 2019 (edited) The M lenses are officially supported, so a real successor to the SL. (unlike S1R) So this must be Leica tech. Edited November 6, 2019 by caissa
Mr.Q Posted November 6, 2019 Share #173 Posted November 6, 2019 So dpreview says the biggest weakness of the SL2 is the AF system. Chris finds the Lumix cameras are faster in AF-S and much more reliable in AF-C. He finds the SL2's tracking to 'wobble' a lot and describes it as 'disconcerting.' So there's that. If AF speed/accuracy is a priority, the S1R is the better camera.
caissa Posted November 6, 2019 Share #174 Posted November 6, 2019 (edited) yes, if .... And if object detection AF is too nerve-wrecking it can probably be turned off, I hope. Edited November 6, 2019 by caissa

I'll wait before passing a final judgement on it.

Bob Andersson Posted November 6, 2019 Share #178 Posted November 6, 2019 Leica have rarely (never?) felt the need to compete on price but I wonder how they will fare against the S1/S1R? A £2k+ price premium seems a lot unless, like me, you found the Lumix bodies very uncomfortable in the hand. If this announcement had been made before that of the X1D II I'd have bought in and been very happy and I suspect that the SL2 will make many existing SL owners very happy indeed. Chapeau, Leica - I don't need an SL2 in my life right now as I'm still in love with the XCD 21mm but if I ever manage to buy a lottery ticket which isn't defective... 😎

In the SL2 review, he pins the SL2 AF to be poorer than S1R. I’m thinking either SL2 AF sucks big time or I do not feel Chris is that creditable over his comments. Anyway watching the few video reviews by others weren’t negative over SL2’s AF.

We'll see if the final version improves.
