Posted on the Barnack November Challenge,

Multiple round objects. Today was the transit of Mercury in front of the sun. It was visible throughout much of the earth and especially in the US. Unfortunately, we had a snowstorm and clouds come in last night and was still around throughout the transit this morning here in Colorado. I still persevered and got a few images through clouds. For anyone with clear skies, I am seriously ENVIOUS.

These were taken with a Leica Q2 connected to my Swarovski ATS-80 Spotting Scope using the Leica Q Digi-Scoping adapter. 1/15, f/1.7, ISO 1600, 20X Spotting Scope magnification, on a Sky Adventurer Tracker to keep the sun in the frame without me having to constantly manually adjust. I discovered and used the Interval Timer function and had it take an image every 15 seconds. This was very helpful for not jarring the setup and just not having to push the shutter very often. I used an Firecrest 82mm 18-stop Eclipse (ND) filter on the front of the spotting Scope.

I'm showing an individual image and then a composite of five. I assure you I did everything possible in LR and Photoshop to enhance and make the images more visible.

That would be an seriously bad event to have happen when traveling!

Any thoughts about why your battery charger failed?

I am sorry that this happened to you. It must have been so frustrating.

A month or so ago, I admitted that I travel with two chargers, preparing for the happy face mild ridicule that I received here. But it's not only the possibility of failure, because, if you're traveling, you might leave the charger plugged in at the previous hotel.

This happened to me several years ago with a different camera system. I had Amazon Europe send a replacement to the next hotel I was heading for. Worked out perfectly. But now I travel with a backup.

Ken,

You’ve heightened my sensitivity to this issue. I think for any extended trips I too will carry a backup charger. It just seems smart.

I might add that I do now view my iPhone 11 Pro as a solid backup for my Q2. I still will take serious photos with the Q2, but I also will supplement more casual photos with the iPhone. It’s a great pairing in my way of looking at things.

No ideas.  It just quit.  As the camera is so new, accessories like a charger are in short supply, so a replacement battery charger could not be arranged on mY travel aboard a cruise ship. So the camera was and still is a brick until I get warranty service stateside. To say I’m disappointed is oversimplifying matters.i just completed the trip of a lifetime visiting 5 countries without a camera.  :(

I am so sorry to hear of your experience. How sad!! I normally take two cameras on long trips. Usually driven by different lens combinations or specific subjects I anticipate photographing. Your experience is causing me to think a little more about overlap and backup. I’d be seriously pissed if this happened to me.
Was there not a Leica store in any city nearby? I actually usually try and visit them when I have an opportunity.
Again, sorry for such a great trip to include a dead camera.

An idea. For future reference anyway. This forum is so diverse and in my opinion made up of a bunch of really nice folks. I bet if you could have posted your situation perhaps someone near where your cruise was going could have loaned or helped you get a charger. I would have done that if you’d been anywhere near me in Colorado. Of course I don’t mean on a cruise in Colorado.

That's what we call a photographer's living hell.  What a terrible chain of events.

We just returned from two weeks in Hawaii, where I took my M-P 240 kit, and my emergency backup camera, a Fuji X100F.  I always take the X100F when traveling.  If the 240 (or its charger) bites the dust, at least I'll have something to shoot with besides my cell phone.

Tomorrow my Q2 will at long last arrive ( YAAAAAY!!! 😄 ).  Next trip I will be taking my 240, my Q2 and my X100F.  A triple redundant safety net is easily worth carrying the X100F's extra 16 oz./469 g.

I suppose I should also get a second charger for at least the 240 or the Q2.

Get a Nitecore ULSL Charger . It’s great as a backup but has been reliable I travel with it alone.

I’m mystified as to cause of he charger failure. When I returned from my trip I sent it to Leica USA for warranty.

Good idea on the Nitecore charger. I’m going to order one! Thanks!

+1 on the Nitecore charger. I always travel with one. In spite of the $250 cost, I do have an extra Q2 battery. With the capacity for taking many hundreds of photos on one battery charge, two batteries definitely gives me a lot of margin even if a charger failed.
