Why not ? Didn’t Panasonic let Leica used its best tech to build the Q and the SL ? Two full frame cameras, more than three years before Lumix S1 and S1R seen the light of day.

Panasonic just choose to go big with S1R. I am sure that they can do very small. Just look at tiny GM1

Hope you are correct. Nothing would please me more than to see an SL2 that is smaller / lighter and yet has IBIS. Its probably the only way I'm spending €6K+ to upgrade to this camera.

Otherwise I'll just head out and take pictures and check back September 2023 when we'll be speculating about SL3.

They are competing for the same FF L-mount users now. Would they still license better tech to Leica before they get to use it in their own FF cameras? It depends partly on the value creation, I guess, license proceeds vs. lost sales for S1R/S1 vs. L-mount becoming more widely accepted in the market. Still, for Panasonic success of its FF strategy is a priority. So, perhaps they won’t. 😁

Don’t know the behind the scene deal between the three companies. There are more than just a mount sharing.

May be Panasonic will share tech with Sigma also. Who knows?

Panasonic and Leica are not direct competitors. Not the same customer nor the same price range.

For example I will never buy a Panasonic again. I think that their UI does not fit me. And their emphasis on big and heavy, just disappoint me.

You can add me to the list of Leica leavers, having happily moved to the S1R.

The weight and size difference is, IMO, insignificant, but the functional advantages of the S1R over the SL, and possibly the SL2 are momentous.  So, yes, there is competition, and not only from the camera bodies.

actually in last youtube interview with red dot camera, Dr Kaufmann gave us hints about SL2 using 3 buttons lay out in CL style.

He just said, that they were thinking about it. Seems like, UI uniformity across the range is better for most customers.

It is better from a software development point of view = less cost & more rapid deployment. SL2 = Q2 inside with multiple lens support

There are folks that left for the feature-rich S1/R just like there are folks that left for the simple and ergonomic X1D.

Leica can't make everyone happy, but I would think the majority of the existing customer base still shoots with a M and that's who they'd cater to. Leica has always been about the essentials.

I'm sure the jack of all trades Lumix takes excellent photos but I'm not a Panasonic man at heart. Same with Sony, Canon, and Nikon. Those cameras would never make me happy.

Fully agree. I had the S1R since May and used it extensively on several safaris. I sold it earlier this week and have gone back to using my SL, couldn't be happier!

I keep repeating this, it's not just about more megapixels. Simplicity, intuitive ease of use and image rendering are more important to me than the super sharp, clinical images that IMO Sony, Lumix etc. produce. Make no mistake technologically etc. they're great, I've tried them all and keep coming back to my Leicas.

Especially your wildlife work doesn't need  tons of megapixels, Mike. I get more than excellent A3+ prints from a simple MFT (GX8) camera. You should try it - 800 mm equ. reach, five EV values stabilisation and "Leica"rendering of the 100-400  @ 20 MP gets me shots I would miss with the heavy stuff.

Most will change their mind, once they have read Jono‘s review.

Sir, you erroneously equate many of us with lemmings.  I fail to understand the undying loyalty many, such as yourself, have to a logo/brand.  Most of us are dedicated to image acquisition and composition, regardless of the brand name stamped on the camera's head.

You can count on me, not to buy any Panasonic. Especially not huge S1, S1R and S1H trio.

I guess you could say that the three cameras stacked together are "huge."  But side by side, the S1R is not "huge" when compared to the current SL. Slightly larger, yes, but it is not gargantuan.  Is it heavier? yes, but there are more goodies within.

Here is a size comparison:https://www.apotelyt.com/compare-camera/leica-sl-vs-panasonic-s1r
