I took a family vacation to Scotland and Ireland for 10 days. We just got back.

I took my M10P with Summilux 35 and APO Summicron 50 lenses. Also cheated a little by packing a Sony RX100VII for long lens shots and video.

During the trip, we hiked, visited ancient churches and historic sites. We also took a few bus tours. In Edinburgh, we had tickets for the Military Tattoo and great seats. I shot over 1,800 images with my M10. All of them were taken with the Summilux 35 lens. I shot about 300 images with my pocketable Sony and about 150 with my iPhone XS.

Using a single lens and body was a great relief to my shoulders and back as everything fit into a Billingham Hadley Pro. I also took an 11" iPad Pro for notes and to back up my cameras. It was running the public beta of iOS 13 so the ability to ingest RAW, JPG, and video files easily made for a very usable and light back up solution.

Attached are two images captured in the Library at Trinity College.

Now that I am home, I started culling images with Capture One Pro. OMG, I got some keepers for sure.

As a result of this experience, I will be selling off my entire Fuji XT3 system and XF primes and zooms. I will be listing these items in the classifieds on this forum and on Luminous-Landscape.com as I had great experiences selling gear on both sites in the past.

My plan is to bank the cash from the sale of my Fuji system and use it to buy the upcoming "SL2" with the excellent Leica 24-90 zoom. This will provide a workable zoom range along with the ability to use my M lenses. After this transaction, I'll be out of GAS! :)

A few shots from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Captured with my M10P and Summilux 35 FLE and processed with Capture One Pro.

No shots with the 50?

Yes. It was in my my bag, but it never got mounted on to my camera during the whole trip.

On my next trip, I might just take my Summicron 35 ASPH to further reduce the weight of my kit.

may i ask which software do you use to back up photos onto your ipad pro?

I'm running the iOS 13 public beta on my iPad. This OS allows you to plug external drives, USB media readers, etc. directly into the device. I used a SanDisk USB SD card read. plugged into a short adapter cable with a USB-C male plug on one end which plugs into the USB-C port on my iPad Pro 11".  I used Photos on the iPad to ingest the image files from my Leica M10P and Sony RX100VII. This backed up my camera's SD cards.

When I got home, I imported my images into nested folders on my iMacPro using Capture One Pro. Since I did not need the backups on my iPad, I used the Apple utility, Image Capture, to deleted the back up files on my iPad. Using this app, I could have also imported the back up files to my iMac Pro, but this was not necessary.

I used a SanDisk 128GB SD card in my Leica. It had plenty of capacity so I did not have to change SD cards after 10 days of shooting.

The official release of iOS 13 is supposed to be announced this month. I think that all models of iPads except for the original iPad can upgrade to this version. This will give external drive and media reader capability to all of them.

An excellent choice - I've just been doing the same thing during a business trip to Sri Lanka.  All the images here were with the 35 Cron:

In terms of 50, I'd also recommend anyone to consider the Summarit 50 2.4 or the 75 2.4.  They're stellar little lenses, and while they don't have the charisma of the APO or Asph variants, they are light, draw beautifully, and either complements the 35 really well.  My TWO lens combination is the 35 Cron Asph and the Summarit 75 2.4.  This works really well in urban or great outdoors settings.

Really enjoyed your post, thank you.  In prior travel, it was always lugging a heavy DSLR with a mix of lenses, have been trying to travel with less, and focus more on the photography.  I don't think I am down to 1 lens yet, but find the 50mm gets the most use in my travel / city photography thus far, with the 35mm coming in second.  Enjoyed your website as well, nice work!

Lovely images!

The one camera-one lens concept took a hold of me years ago, and that’s how I travel. Sometimes I’m asked “what if your camera malfunctions?”.  It’s a good question, but I don’t worry about it because I guess then I’d have more time to be in the moment of my holiday. Besides, these days all of us have cameras in our phones.

Some examples of images, posted in Steve’s site:

... and revisited a few years later:

Thank you everyone for your comments. Great community!

As I mentioned in my original post, I also brought the new Sony RX100 VII, the new, highly rated compact camera. This camera has the 35mm equivalent tele range up to 200mm. It does great video, has a built-in flash, charges directly via micro-usb port and fits in a shirt pocket. It was great for family snaps, panoramas and whenever a long zoom was needed. The IQ is great for it's category, but no where close the M10-P. I was the camera that we handed to unknown people to take a family group photo.

I working on processing all of the images captured. I will post my best ones in a new portfolio on my website. Here are few more from my trip.

Bud James

If you can do your travels with a 35mm and a Leica then you're living the dream. I had a National Geographic photographer tell me one  time that he wished he could just take his Leica and a 35mm on an assignment. You know, just get on the plane with the Leica and that'd be it. Ofcourse he never did that but that was his dream.  Good luck with your photography

Looking at my travel pictures from the last 7 years with the M9 and M10, 90-95% are taken with the same lens, a Summicron 35 ASPH. Most of these are of course more holiday snaps than fine art, but still... I feel that a single focal length might even improve on the way you look at your subject compared to the possibility to easily use a variety focal lengths, like when using a zoom.

I own the Summicron 35 ASPH. It's a great lens! After buying the Summilux 35 FLE, I thought that I would sell the Summicron. However, I just can't part with it because it is so small and most of my shots are taken at apertures smaller than f2. The image quality from both of these lens are addicting.

Hi Bud:

Nice images there!  I’m all in for the one lens travel kit.  I have found the Summilux 35 APSH FLE to be almost ideal as a single setup.  I’m considering giving the 28 Summilux a serious look as a contender as well.  I’ve been using the Summaron 28 as my “only lens” lately although I’m finding the f/5.6 to be enough of a compromise that I don’t think it wins as a universal single lens travel kit.

I’m curious about your travel backup kit...

I too have considered using my iPad as a camera SD card backup however, I’ve found the read times for an SD card (using the apple plug in dongle on iOS 12.4.1) to be pretty slow.  It’s not that I need super speed, but it renders my iPad (a pretty current version of the pro) useless while it’s reading images. What is your experience with respect to this with the new beta OS?

I am also considering using on of these as a back up drive while on the road:  https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1503997-REG/lacie_stjb1000800_1tb_rugged_boss_ssd.html/?ap=y&gclid=CjwKCAjw5fzrBRASEiwAD2OSVwoEomoSrm2PiGjBmO01H6sFwYn0JdB0l-Fc6-bgdbMdkmNqbR8V4RoCNKAQAvD_BwE&lsft=BI%3A514&smp=y

Hi Kevin.

I have had great experiences with the Western Digital My Passport Wirelss units. Last year, I upgraded to the SSD model that you can see on the B&H website: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1366291-REG/wd_wdbamj0020bgy_nesn_my_passport_wireless_ssd.html

I have a 1TB spinning disk Passport Wireless for sale.

These units can create a wireless network so that you can watch movies and view images with a wifi-connected iPad or iPhone. I found them to be very reliable.

For my recent trip to Scotland and Ireland, I brought my new iPad Pro running iOS 13 beta which allowed me to directly import images from the SD cards using a standard USB media reader connected via a USB-female to USB-C cable. This was my back-up system while traveling. My 12" iPad Pro has 1TB of memory which is more than enough for any vacation on which I take photos.

Bud James

I truly join in to the «one-lens-around-the-world & living-the-dream» idea. I still remember my first few years with a 35 only on my first Leica 20 years ago... cant remember missing a thing really. Just enjoyd that compact little set.

... but then the «inevitable» fidling of switching lenses started... 😉

I spent an entire year with the original M Monochrom and a Summilux 50 ASPH. That, and my cell phone (iPhone at the time I believe) was the only cameras I had.
It was a great learning experience. Not much has changed, the only gear I have now is the M10-P and an APO50 and Cron 35 ASPH v1, with the APO seeing about 90% of the use. The rest of my gear is now sold. But I am considering selling the Cron 35 and getting a Cron 28 and a Summarit 90mm 2.4, and thus end up on the classic 28/50/90 setup with fairly light-weight and compact high-performing lenses.
