The X1D comments above aren’t even relevant. This is about the SL2 sensor and we don’t know yet if it will have at Base gain a FWC of 605000e-, with 3.618e- read noise which amounts to a monstrous 104.5dB or 17.4 stops of dynamic range, on-chip PDAF, 20 fps at 16 bit, 8K video, IBIS. The X1D should be compared to the M. After 20 pages and 400 posts, it's good to have the forum police on alert. Jeff

Chaemono Posted September 5, 2019 Share #404 Posted September 5, 2019 I sense some anxiety here about the upcoming SL2. Maybe it won’t have the Sofort battery after all. 😁

And even the primes push the size envelope. I could see, however, owning the 24-90 (despite the size and lack of internal focus, although useful OIS), and supplementing it with a native prime or two, or perhaps just M lenses (but not weather sealed). I agree with your take. The 24-90 is what attracts me to SL system. I feel the other L lenses are a bit too big for what they offer. So I recently reacquired an used copy of the SL + 24-90 to re-evaluate how it would complement my X1D II, and I must say that initial impressions are mixed. The zoom is excellent, but now that I've been spoiled by lighter systems, it feels even more substantial and heavier than the last time I owned it. If I were to own one system, the SL would be my choice for it's IQ and versatility, but like you said, but I'm not so sure about it as a 2nd system. I'll test the combo for a few more days, but I may just move on to plan B, which is beefing up my Fuji system with more zoom lenses.

colonel Posted September 5, 2019 Share #409 Posted September 5, 2019 A few years ago everyone compared Leica releases to Sony. Mostly M vs A7 series. Totally irrelevant IMHO Now it’s X1D and S1 I suppose those who skittle between systems, or are well endowed enough to have 10 systems, are continually taking pictures of brick walls to compare, but what I have found over many years of owning many systems, is that the IQ is so good today, it’s the fault of the photographer and not the camera if the photo is rubbish. Therefore the primary consideration is what gets your juices going. If it’s the X1D, S1, FP good luck to you ... For me, the SL produces more, and more consistent keepers then I have had with any other AF system. The truth is I like the handling of the Z6 more then the A7 series but the SL to me is a different level Everyone needs to find their level. What’s important for me about the SL2 is that it keeps the same mojo. I hear it does, albeit slightly tweaked, with the innards improved for the inevitable technology bump. Sounds good....

The good thing is we now have more options than the big Zoom - the SL(2) is now a flexible system. You can use the Zooms for flexibility (but heavy), or the Summicrons (fast and more compact), or even M lenses (even smaller), or the 24-105 Pana (lighter than the 24-90 and not too bad), or the Sigma 45. You could mix, for example a longer lenses (75 or 90) with AF and a compact M 28mm lens (where AF is not so important). I have also used the CL 23mm lens a couple of times for evening/party where you dont need the full MP and want a more compact set. I find the SL or better the L-Mount system to have become a quite flexible system with many options.
hexx Posted September 5, 2019 Share #412 Posted September 5, 2019 (edited) Is there any chance of more streamlined body like X1D with the new SL2? Or M-sized one. As much as I appreciate SL for what it is I just couldn’t get myself to like it and eventually buy it. Very well made, lovely EVF and user interface, controls in the right places and so on; just too big and heavy I tried it on several occasions and left asking myself question why I wouldn’t go for X1D instead - similar size, bit lighter, similar price bucket (when lenses are considered) or even more wishful thinking - a single body for both L and M mounts where one could go light with M lenses and then attach grip for larger L lenses. That would be a perfect solution for me Edited September 5, 2019 by hexx

Panasonic and Sigma glass don't appeal to me. Honestly, I'd much rather shoot with native Zeiss or Voigtlander lenses on a Sony. And M lenses are a compromise because they perform better on a M. What I'd like to see is a compact SL lens lineup, each around the size of the Sigma 45/2.8. - 21mm Super-Elmar-SL - 28mm Elmarit-SL - 35mm Summarit-SL - 50mm Summarit-SL - 90mm Elmarit-SL - 28-35-50mm Tri-Elmar-SL That kind of lineup would definitely grab my attention.

Tailwagger Posted September 5, 2019 Share #417 Posted September 5, 2019 As far as bodies are concerned, while the weight/size thing might be relevant for some, I doubt my Ms as I use them are any lighter or smaller than the current SL, given the EVF and a full RRS grip are always attached. Weighed my Billingham Digital, 75mm Summilix, 50 Summilux and 21mm Super-Elmar the other day which tallied 3kg/6.5 pounds. The SL with 24-90, in the same bag, isnt likely to be any heavier. Certainly my M10 with lenses on the shoulder isnt a burden despite my advancing years.

You could be right, but every time I go to the same Leica store that I bet you go to and walk around with the SL and compare it to my Q and CL and the store's M10 sample, I regretfully put it back: just feels too heavy. And there are a number of people on the forum who have traded their SL in for this very reason: if it feels too heavy, then for all intents and purposes, it is too heavy. No doubt it's very personal, but I prefer a little heft in the body. Perhaps why I won't be ranting when the downsized S3 sensor arrives in the SL sans IBIS. 😀

Completely agree with your perspective on L-Mount having become a flexible system with many options and one that will become even more flexible over the next 12-18 months as more lens get released that will offer many additional options on the speed/IQ/portability continuum. My personal wish for SL2 is that it have just enough additional resolution to satisfy those times when I require it (mostly landscapes) but not so much that it slows down the camera, creates undue burden in post and managing enormous files. Personally that sweet spot would be in the 36MP to 41MP range as some rumors suggest. I hope the rumors are correct. I find the whole MP race exhausting and largely irrelevant to the enjoyment of photography or producing quality images for that matter. With few exceptions if photographers are truly honest with themselves they will conclude that they really don't need more MP than the current SL. The principal real reason for which I would appreciate a bump to 36MP or 41MP is not because I really need the extra resolution using SL glass, but because it would further open the possibility of leveraging all the high quality lightweight TL glass I now own (wonderful 35mm 1.4 etc) and do so at a very acceptable resolution of around 18MP (instead of current 10MP). That further expands an already flexible system and opens yet another dimension of options. Under that scenario on any given day as I head out the door depending on what I plan to shoot, how long I plan to do it and how much I want to carry I can come with the "perfect" combination for that day. That's my definition of Leica bliss. In terms of ergonomics I hope the new SL2 is a little lighter than SL (100g to 150g would be fine) but no heavier. Certainly would not want it to tip the scales in S1 or S1R territory. IS would be nice and probably the feature I would value the most, as it would further expand the usefulness of high quality compact slower glass. At this stage of my photographic journey what I value the most is flexibility and ability to mix and match whatever gear I own in best way that meets my goals on any given day of shooting. Whatever the ultimate specs of the SL2 turn out to be, what is most important to me is what the Colonel so well stated, that is that the SL2 keeps the same "mojo" as the SL.
