jrethorst Posted August 20, 2019 Share #1 Posted August 20, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) After a wonderful decade with the Digilux 2, I've decided to get an M10 and (at least to start) one lens, maybe the 35 Summicron. I love Leica Glow, which the Diglux certainly has, and would like that from the new lens. I understand Walter Mandler's designs for earlier 35 'Crons had it. Does the current lens? If not, where can I find manufacture dates for earlier versions, which I think included 3 and 4. Or, would any versions of the 35 Summilux (or even some 28mm) be a better choice? Thank you. pico Posted August 20, 2019 Share #3 Posted August 20, 2019 The so-called 'glow' is highly dependent upon the lens, for example early 35mm Summilux @ƒ1.4 and certain characteristics of scene. There is no lens other than the Thambar that guarantees whacked-out renditions.

pico Posted August 20, 2019 Share #5 Posted August 20, 2019 (edited) The so-called glow must be clarified or entirely debunked depending upon the aspirant photographer. Starting with those who wish to purchase a Leica glow, there is no lens to guarantee such, so give it up. I can come back with more information but to begin I ask those who look at classic (old) Leica images also recognize that they were made upon film which is not largely available today. It was slow, inclined to halation, hue-blindness and so many miniature (35mm) photos were necessarily made at slow shutter speeds that promoted 'glow'. More? Just ask. earleygallery Posted August 20, 2019 Share #6 Posted August 20, 2019 The 'Leica glow' was just spherical aberrations, so a Digilux 2 really shouldn't suffer from that! I suspect you mean something else than 'glow'. Please, not the 'Leica look' ! 3 1
lct Posted August 21, 2019 Share #7 Posted August 21, 2019 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) If glow means halos around highlights the Digilux 2 has never done that if memory serves. Do you mean that you're after a lens with the same IQ as that of the Digilux 2? If so you must like contrasty pics with saturated colors i guess. Lenses like current Summicron 28/2 asph, 35/2 asph or 50/2, Elmarit 28/2.8 asph or Summarit 35/2.4, 35/2.5, 50/2.4 or 50/2.5 will give you that. Among previous lenses, Elmarit 28/2.8 v4, Summicron 35/2 v4 or 50/2 v4 can fit the bill too. Same for current Summilux lenses but they are more expensive obviously. Jeffry Abt Posted August 21, 2019 Share #8 Posted August 21, 2019 I think the 35mm Cron will satisfy on all counts. You will be happy for sure!
Ko.Fe. Posted August 21, 2019 Share #9 Posted August 21, 2019 (edited) Glow is result of weak optical performance at wide aperture. Get ELC Lux. Summarit 50 1.5 has it as well but less. It is much more reasonably priced lens comparing to ELC Lux. This is why I had it. Nice lens, but it was bit too heavy for me on M3. It should glow even more on digital Edited August 21, 2019 by Ko.Fe.
g2van Posted August 21, 2019 Share #10 Posted August 21, 2019 My favourite Leica lens with the glow is the 35mm pre-asph summilux.

otto.f Posted August 21, 2019 Share #13 Posted August 21, 2019 (edited) What is Leica Glow? Never heard of it and what’s more: I don’t think I ever saw a glow in Leica photo’s other than something in the situation that would be recorded by any other brand. otto.f Posted August 21, 2019 Share #19 Posted August 21, 2019 Thanks for the illustrations. They confirm what I posted earlier; lens aberrations that can be found at every brand.
