Is it possible to use collapsable L39 lenses on a Monochrom? I know Leica say we shouldn't use them on the M-9 and one or two others whose name I forget. The problem is when you push the lens into the body, whether there is enough clearance. Of course, I know an L39-to-M-mount adapter need be employed.

You can measure it yourself and manipulate the lens with tape or rubber rings. But be careful, don't damage the black coating of the camera chamber.

Also, if you by accident take a picture with the lens collapsed, nothing should be damaged.

I think there's information in your camera manual about this - check it first.

Of course you can use any collapsible lens if you don't collapse it! I think most are fine, the 'risk' is if you mount/unmount it in collapsed state you might scratch the insides of the camera.

I've just bought the body from Red Dot cameras, and it is scheduled to arrive today. As it is Used, I'm not sure if the manual is included.

All sounds a bit scary, though. I do have a couple of L39 collapsable lenses, so wondered if I could try them. However, I also have a 7Artisans 50mm f/1.1 on its way too, to get me started. It will be a while before I can afford a Summilux... I might forget the collapsable lenses for a while.

Hello Rob,

I'm happy user of Monochrom, and when I need/want something compact, light but great results on MM1, I use my long time owned Leitz

screw mount lenses as I know them well.

The big surprise is I prefer their "old time" fingerprint on Monochrom which can be used as it comes out of the camera "zero post-processing"...

This trio Elmar/Summaron 35/50/90 can be winner,

and no danger to collapse the Elmar 3.5/50 in my use 😉.

Bonus,  👍 SOOGZ A36 to E39 adapter let me use all my E39 filters on them, colored filters are kind of fun on Monochrom.

Yes, including pushing the back of the lens into the sensor. Use caution!!!

Just now, RobM said:

Many people put rubber bands around the lens to prevent them absent-mindedly pushing them in.

The unanswered question is, how far can the lens collapse without going into the sensor? This would seem to be a trial and error process and the error could prove costly.

UPDATE: Got the camera back from being CLA'd, and all works beautifully. Bought a Summar 50mm f/2 lens from the same place, but have only had time to try five shots. Busy few days ahead. Hopefully I'll get more time with it at the weekend. Everything running VERY smoothly.
