I fully agree. That one-trick pony should be put out to grass.

Haha! Never!

So many of the examples posted in this thread are so very appealing, not despite, but because of their shallow depth of field and gorgeous bokeh.

I've also never understood why some refer to the Noctilux as a "one-trick pony", either.  There's no prohibition to using it stopped down when one chooses to do so.

Yes. Of course this lens can be used stopped down.

However, given its high price, some photographers may be tempted to shoot at 0.95 even when the resulting shot will look contrived or even inept. Many (not all) of the shots in this thread demonstrate that.

Sorry if out of topic ...

wide open or not I don't know 🥴

If important for other users,

I use my Noctilux 1.0 as other lenses that I have/use

stopped down or not depending on the subject and the film mainly,

Here a picture that I can't tell if it's full open or not 😉

Perhaps so, but that is not a knock on the lens, but rather on the photographer(s). :)

As to pricing, yes it's expensive, but that can be rationalized too.  One gets the equivalent of a 50 1.4 lens plus the rarity/addition of a fast lens capable of shooting with twice the light.  I suppose not worth discussing; your point is well taken but this is just the other side of the coin.

I agree. I don't see the price as an issue. It's just that I would rarely shoot at 0.95, so a slower 50 would be sufficient for me.

A photograph is not a true representation of a subject, it is the crystallisation of a selected aspect of a moment through an individuals eyes. This  moment reflects how they see and feel about a subject and how best they can express that using the available tools.

Every individual is contained within their own bias, formed out of personal experience and expressed through opinion. Some bias contains the belief ‘their’ opinion is the ‘only valid’ way of seeing the world and they promote that, (one trick pony) where some  find ‘others’ opinions  as a means to evolve their own.

The nocti  is versatile and provides me - stopped down - with the means to be more focused on those moments which interest me and shows me the aspects of what other photographers focus on better than any other lens which can be used for this purpose.

It is easy to focus on my SL where it sits as my standard lens. As to price and weight.....I don’t have a problem as my digital photos don’t weigh anything and have no intrinsic value.

Thank your for all of the sample images. More undecided than ever about switching from a Noctilux 0.95 to a V4 1.0. Generally speaking I love Mandler glass...

Erik

been there, done that - can only give you same advice given to me. Buy it for the right price, and you won't loose much (or any) if decide to sell later, after getting out and use it; can't go wrong with either.

Thanks nwphil. In the end, after comparing the two, which did you prefer and did you sell one?

you're welcome :) . I went with the 0.95 - being cleaned & lubed at DAG, so hopefully will get it by month's end or so...

that's the thing: I like the rendering of both.

Although different  in many ways, the Nokton 1.1 and sonnar 1.5 ( I owned both) do give a bit of the noct 1.0  nuances (sort of ) and  the otus  1.4 (either 85 or 55) are a bit closer to the Noct 0.95 ( ok, a lot of leeway here, please don't shoot me yet), but those were sort of the characteristics/differences I find to be similar with both Noct's (nokton&sonnar vs Otus), and I do prefer the Otus  - hence going with 0.95.

In the end, could use this same argument of sorts to go the other way, and get the 1.0 instead.

Please tell me which piece of this photo is in focus. Maybe it's my eyes? Help!

Must it be?

Must the one I have posted be in focus?
