Like everyone I am entitled to my opinions ... same as you. I owned a Noctilux f/0.95 and it was just a lump of glass that weighed over 700 grams, blocked the viewfinder, and, for me, has too narrow depth of field when used wide open. As someone who has been taking photos since 1957 it was anathema. There is an obsession going round that everything must be take at wide aperture. This is a very modern approach to which I don't subscribe ... a bit like drum and bass music compared to classical cello music. One side is fierce, the other is soft and gentle.

The best photos taken throughout the history of photography have used varied DoF. Henri Cartier-Bresson, David Bailey, Lord Snowdon, Cecile Beaton, and those unnamed late 19C photographers who spent days setting up their equipment to take some of the finest landscape shots ever taken used varied apertures. There is nothing wrong with wide open f/0.95 shots if that's what you like. Go ahead and do it because it won't bother me. So stop shaking your head. Everyone in the world is different. Just don't expect me to be impressed with a passing phase.

I find the opinion that "great photographers from the history of photography were not interested in bokeh and never used a Noctilux" quite interesting. (Disclaimer, this is not an attack on anyone holding such opinions, but merely a commentary on said opinion).

For a start, the Leica Noctilux lens was not released till 1966 and most of great photographers who allegedly would not have used the Noctilux pre-dated it. Nevertheless, here is a picture of Henri Cartier-Bresson himself using the Noctilux 50/1.2 during the Paris riots of 1968.  (Source: https://the.me/dont-just-shoot-50mm-because-henri-cartier-bresson-did-so/)

And with regards to great photographers of history not being interested in "bokeh" or fast lenses, I think many people have forgotten the pioneers of photography who used the wetplate collodion method. Any search on google images for such historical photos will show a great deal of "bokeh", although it was clearly not called that at the time. By way of mathematical proof: one of the most popular (and now sought after) portrait lenses from those days, the Petval Dallmeyer 3A Patent (made in London) was a 406mm lens with an aperture of f/4, and used on a typical 8x10" wet-plate would be the 35mm equivalent of a 52mm f/0.52 lens in terms of depth of field. (See https://mmcalc.com/) That's considerably greater "narrow depth of field" than the Noctilux, and those old amazing portraits definitely show it.

You make some good points. Gives me something to look up and read about. Also interesting article, thanks for sharing.

I don't understand the negativity towards fast lenses like the Noctilux. Buying a lens that's large and heavy due to its fast max aperture, while having no intention of utilizing said fast aperture, then complaining about it is beyond me.

Might be nothing more than a simple adjustment.

Mercan is using the SL so most likely nothing to adjust. More likely just focusing practice.

True. However, but there may be some issue with the alignment of the elements resulting in off-focus. Assuming he’s using the focusing aids and he’s spot on

On of my neighbors downstairs does it every other day.  Too bad I don't have a Noct to capture it.

It happened after I upgraded my M9 to SL because of the sensor failure on September. I was focusing more easily with M9.  I am now using focus peaking most of the times but still not all the picture are in focus. I am not sure if it is due to my limited SL experience or due to alignment problem.

Those are the pictures in focus. I hope it is not an adjustment problem.
