I had no idea that the ISO dial, shutter speed dial and on/off switch shutter release are self-contained modules affixed to the top cover. The whole top cover is connected to the rest of the camera via a ribbon cable and terminal. Very cool. I'll post up a picture of it when I have a chance.

I wonder if this helps prevent dust ingress ...but others have reported dust in the viewfinder. Pictures would be interesting.

I just had the small upgrade done last week while in Wetzlar. Leica Customer Care was outstanding. I turned in the camera 8 AM Monday morning and the repair was completed by Thursday afternoon. I had contacted them ahead of time, so they were expecting me.

Can't comment on whether the "small" upgrade is worth it to everyone, but it was for me. I really missed not having the in-camera level for architectural photography and the touch screen is great. Engraved top-plate was icing on the cake. I could not justify the full upgrade financially. I had an M10-P loaner while my M10 was in for the upgrade, and while it is noticeably quieter, the regular M10 is no slouch either.

I asked Stefan Daniel why the full upgrade is so expensive, and his reply was that the shutter modules are different in the M10 and the P, so that is a big part of the expense. I asked to have my old top cover returned which they did for me. Another person in my group had the small conversion done as well and they returned his top cover as well. Make sure you request this when you turn the camera in for service as this may not be done automatically! They completely checked the camera and added another year to the warranty as well. I was having an issue with my M10 not recognizing my 24/3.8 Elmar-M. No matter what I did, from cleaning the sensor on the body mount, cleaning the "pits" on the lens mount, etc., nothing worked which was very frustrating. Now it works like a charm!

I have been inside many M cameras when doing minor repair work, but never the M10. I had no idea that the ISO dial, shutter speed dial and on/off switch shutter release are self-contained modules affixed to the top cover. Very good to know Leica will return the parts when requested. These are very valuable parts and resale could help greatly toward the very high cost of the conversion.

Same with me. I’ve had the ‘small’ upgrade performed last month because I wanted the Level Gauge (Wasserwaage), like in my M240. No need for a more silent shutter ... I’ll wait for the M11 😉

Leica CS did a great job and fairly fast; within three weeks incl. shipping from and to the Netherlands.

Very happy! Thank you Wetzlar!

Great to hear that they turnaround your conversion "light" in a timely manor. That tells me that they are set up to perform conversions as a process.

As promised, here is a picture of the inside of the M10 top cover. As you can see, each of the controls on the top cover has a module associated with it. Rear control wheel, ISO setting knob, on/off switch and shutter speed dial. These are connected to the rest of the camera via a ribbon cable.

I've been inside many analog M cameras over the years, but never a digital M. This was a real eye-opener, and it shows a real advance over the older cameras. I was also with how hefty the top cover is. Part of this is the brass basis of the top cover, but also the sub-assemblies attached to it.

I will put through additional photos individually due to image size restrictions.

Jeff, thanks so much for posting this! I never saw this before, very interesting.

One question. How do you post multiple images in one posting?

I received an email from the Leica service center in NJ today that my M10 is now in Germany waiting conversion. NJ service center received it from me last Tuesday.

Very interesting. Thanks for posting. I probably would never have seen inside my M10 top shelf otherwise. BTW, I think I spotted a tiny dust spec on the other side of my View Finder/Eye Piece yesterday. Do you see any way to unscrew or remove the OVF to clean?

$3K to get the shutter that Leica should have put in this camera in the first place??? That is really disappointing, I had either better start looking for a good used M10P or just live with my loud M10. Even with silent shutters on my Z6 cameras I still rely on my M10 a ton for work but the shutter noise is just stupid loud in tone, quite annoying.

Damn Leica...

So many people rush to get the latest kit. Wait 2 years and you get the extras at low cost. A lesson to learn?

A lesson to learn? Every time I decline to be suckered into investment possibilities I win. Same with gambling. Patience is rewarded.
