Bob Andersson Posted May 7, 2019 Share #261 Posted May 7, 2019 Advertisement (gone after registration) I may be wrong but I get the impression (from the sensor database measurements - Screen vs Print) that those DxOMark scores are predicated on downsizing the sensor output to 8 MP for use on an 8"x12" 300 dpi print. On a per pixel basis the S1 seems to outperform the S1R, indeed it would be a surprise if it didn't. I'm genuinely struggling to understand why anyone who doesn't print very large would choose the S1R over the S1 but maybe I'm just lacking in imagination. 😀 It'll be interesting to see what Leica does eventually announce. Then we can start a topic asking if the SL is a good backup camera for the SL2. 🤣
Advertisement Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 Hi Bob Andersson, Take a look here Is the S1/S1R a good backup camera for SL. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
caissa Posted May 7, 2019 Author Share #262 Posted May 7, 2019 (edited) The reason (for S1R) could also be a certain sloppiness. Even if I want a different detail or another aspect ratio, or if simply the horizon is not looking right (slope), there is enough resolution to fix it in computer without too many losses/traces. Or if the tele lens is simply not long enough. 🤔 Edited May 7, 2019 by caissa

Then we can start a topic asking if the SL is a good backup camera for the SL2. 🤣 Well, the SL lenses (and probably other L-mount ones) are ready to go far beyond 47 MP, so they almost seem a bit wasted on 24 MP (with AA filter), and people who can afford to buy these lenses can probably absorb the S1R's extra cost as well, it is handy to just switch to APS-C crop mode and still have oodles of resolution to have fun with. And there a few differences for video as well, 4k60p is only 1.09x crop on the S1R and 1.5x on the S1, rolling shutter is also a bit less, although the S1 will be sharper and less noisy, since it no crop in 4k30p. With the optional paid firmware features, it will be the more popular camera of the two. I expect the SL2 to have the similar S1R hardware but with SL-like design and interface with thinner sensor glass for M-mount usage and different colour science. Probably not much else.

Probably not much else. Let's take this thread back to the start and my question which I believe has not been clearly answered. As far as the Panasonics go for being a back-up for a M series body what is the news? What is the consensus about use of Leica M mount lenses on the S1 and S1R? I know that 6 bit code is not recorded by them as it is on the SL. The main issue for me is picture quality. Is there any smearing in the corners with the wide Summiluxes on the Panasonics? There probably is very little difference in the >50mm lens range, but has anyone done any testing with the WATE, MATE, and the 21mm, 24mm and 35 mm Summis? It appears that Steve Huff thinks M lenses work great, but he has used Voigtlander lenses. The Panasonic sensor seems great, but how is the sensor glass for the M lenses? Will sensor glass replacement be done on these bodies, as was the case on the Sonys?
caissa Posted May 9, 2019 Author Share #265 Posted May 9, 2019 After many positive reports here a first containing bad news. A camera that failed shortly after the buy. As long as it is the only one, not really a problem for all others. Currently I feel pity for this user, but at the same time I wonder why he puts a video on the web ... I would not do that in his place. So just to be “fair” and not hide anything, here the link. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7XjFAWzv7L4
caissa Posted May 9, 2019 Author Share #266 Posted May 9, 2019 Here a positive report, comparing the Lumix S 1.4/50mm, the Otus 1.4/55mm and the Sigma 1.4/50mm . And the winner is .... the Lumix. I say it in advance because the video is in German, so maybe incomprehensible for some/many. But the more than 50 raws shot for this test can be downloaded and you can check them on your own computer. The link is in the YouTube text. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YiN3qVF5wN8

caissa Posted May 9, 2019 Author Share #268 Posted May 9, 2019 (edited) Different lenses on the Lumix S1R. (duration 20 min) Not brand new (but I saw it only now), but maybe still interesting. (A bit too enthusiastic maybe.) Here the link. Edited May 9, 2019 by caissa

Will sensor glass replacement be done on these bodies, as was the case on the Sonys? (Nobody wants to answer this ?) I give it a try. It depends on how much perfection you expect. Which lenses you use (each one is different) and if you use the lenses wide open, or a little dimmed down. If you follow the thread, you can find many hints. You can believe either Jono Slack (who has a few M lenses, but no S1R , and a lot of experience with these lenses), or the always enthusiastic Steve Huff (who has no M Leica lenses, but an S1 (and maybe eye problems ?!) ) . Or believe Thighslapper, who has given his impressions (also in other threads), but is not inclined to do a lot further testing (as he is not expecting surprises). Maybe in the meantime Jono has got access to a S1R and can clarify the issue ? (I wait for that, or a review by Reid reviews, for the final answer ...) Chaemono Posted May 10, 2019 Share #271 Posted May 10, 2019 The thread has morphed into a search index for Lumix S1/S1R reviews. caissa Posted May 10, 2019 Author Share #273 Posted May 10, 2019 (edited) The S1R is in a tie ... But I wonder where is Sonys top camera, the A9 ? It is an also-ran with only a score of 92 (compared to 100 of S1R). Amazing ... (strange ?!). https://petapixel.com/2019/05/09/panasonic-s1r-ties-nikon-d850-sony-a7r-iii-for-top-35mm-sensor-dxomark/ Edited May 10, 2019 by caissa

caissa Posted May 12, 2019 Author Share #276 Posted May 12, 2019 (edited) Here is finally somebody trying to stop the Lumix S1/R . I must confess that after the many sour remarks at the beginning of the SL era, I was almost missing this negative attitude. Well, here is finally the long awaited report. It is not about features and capabilities, but of course about incapabilities ... https://fstoppers.com/originals/panasonics-s1-going-flop-358944 Just imagine being locked into the L-mount system (locked in with Trinity) .... I hate being locked in, so what should be my natural choice ? (Sony, Nikon, Canon, Fuji, Hasselblad ? Please tell me and help me not to get locked in !!) Chaemono Posted May 12, 2019 Share #277 Posted May 12, 2019 Harmless criticism. He still comes across as a Panasonic fanboy.
caissa Posted May 12, 2019 Author Share #278 Posted May 12, 2019 (edited) He uses facts, that are simply lies (lens incompatibility). This is probably stupid and therefore not influential. (OK I agree that Trump tells more lies (more than 20 every day on average) and is much more influential.) But it does not sound like a harmless fanboy. caissa Posted May 14, 2019 Author Share #280 Posted May 14, 2019 (edited) An interesting new option (new for Leica users) is the 6K photo mode. (up to 30 frames/s at 18 MP) A very short video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4CJetaBtor8 There is even a pre-burst mode, for those who fear missing the beginning. I think this is even more useful than AFc (for me). This could be a way to make even sports photographers like Leica lenses. Great, for me this improves the usefulness of the camera by a large amount. (High res mode and this, two options I like. This alliance is really giving me more than expected.) Useful hints. https://www.wimarys.com/panasonic-lumix-s1r-settings-tips-tricks/ Edited May 14, 2019 by caissa
