alemartinezc Posted September 13, 2018 Share #1 Posted September 13, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, I recently found this camera on the local bidding Web site at a reasonable price. The sellar says it works but should need a CLA service because of its age . Do you think it’s a good idea buying it? Thanks. Welcome, dear visitor! alemartinezc Posted September 13, 2018 Author Share #4 Posted September 13, 2018 Corrosion where? On the top plate? Edges of both top and base plates?
romanus53 Posted September 13, 2018 Share #5 Posted September 13, 2018 have a look at the shutter-curtains: holes, wrinkles, dryed out or other damadges. Replacing them is expensive, if anything else works fine a cla should be sufficent.
jerzy Posted September 13, 2018 Share #6 Posted September 13, 2018 This camera is reported as being IA ( with hockey stick) when produced, now it is IC. Nothing wrong with it. I do not think that nickel is corroded, I think it is rather bad photo. Similarly, viewfinder window seem to be cracked, could be as well wrong illumination. Cracked window does not disturb when seeing through, btw. Camera is dirty and needs CLA, curtains may need replacement, this is the cost which you need to take into consideration. Otherwise paint looks good, vulcanite complete, after CLA will be a nice camera.
M9reno Posted September 13, 2018 Share #7 Posted September 13, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) This is not the original vulcanite for this camera, by the way, but it may not bother you. Otherwise, it looks fine externally.
alemartinezc Posted September 13, 2018 Author Share #8 Posted September 13, 2018 Thank you all for your opinions. Here are 2 more photos , one of them shows courtain . Doesn’t look too bad but can’t say more than that. Unfortunately I can’t see the camera personally, because I live at 700 km distance. Any other input would be much appreciated. Danke für ihre Aufmerksamkeit, Alejandro. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Ambro51 Posted September 13, 2018 Share #9 Posted September 13, 2018 Unless it’s discounted well I’d pass. It’s neither a 1A anymore or a “pure” C. I don’t like the corrosion on the lens front nor the Vulcanite.
M9reno Posted September 13, 2018 Share #10 Posted September 13, 2018 (edited) I don’t see the corrosion. But on the vulcanite, I agree, I don’t like it either. Edited September 13, 2018 by M9reno
Ambro51 Posted September 13, 2018 Share #11 Posted September 13, 2018 This. Looks like that camera seen a lot of “damp” Welcome, dear visitor! M9reno Posted September 13, 2018 Share #12 Posted September 13, 2018 From this picture it would appear that the lens is severely glazed by damp, and the shot from the back suggests the same. But they are such bad photographs and contain so many digital artefacts, that it's hard to be sure.
jerzy Posted September 13, 2018 Share #13 Posted September 13, 2018 vulcanite structure changed in the time, it is original and for me looks like contemporary vulcanite used for late IA until early II. Here is sample from my 65xxx which for sure has an original vulcanite. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! camera from Argentina has as well a screw on backside like the cameras from this time had. Screws on the axis of small curtain drums has 2 cutouts, again contemporary for the cameras from this time. My sentence above that it was IA originally is based on Hahne list. This the best list available but it contains some mistakes as well, camera could have been IC from the beginning. And if not than it was converted to IC pretty early, not later than 1932. Here you may check how such cameras are being handled http://collectiblend.com/Cameras/Leitz/Leica-I-Mod-C.html. But take into consideration that cameras offered on auctions quoted there have been CLA-ed, something what you woulod need to add to the price. If the lens is corroded? not sure, ask for more photos
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! camera from Argentina has as well a screw on backside like the cameras from this time had. M9reno Posted September 13, 2018 Share #14 Posted September 13, 2018 The OP's camera is a bit earlier than yours, Jerzy. It looks like 60 082 or something like that. That would put it in 1930, and the vulcanite would look something like this: http://www.collection-appareils.fr/x/html/camera-11421-Leica.html
wlaidlaw Posted September 13, 2018 Share #15 Posted September 13, 2018 I would think there are better buys around than this one. I would agree looks to have been in damp for a long time. There is no particular shortage of these models. Wilson
earleygallery Posted September 13, 2018 Share #16 Posted September 13, 2018 I agree with most comments. The lens looks very hazy and the camera will need a CLA if you want to use it. Maybe worth a punt if it’s VERY cheap (£100 ish) otherwise I’d pass.
alemartinezc Posted September 13, 2018 Author Share #17 Posted September 13, 2018 And this is how the lens look like. The seller asks for USD 220, but I could get a better price (I hope) Welcome, dear visitor! Frankly, for the price quoted, I might take a punt on this.
alemartinezc Posted September 13, 2018 Author Share #19 Posted September 13, 2018 Yes M9reno, that’s exactly the point. It is not every day that you can find a “mint condition” camera here. Not to mention a lens. On the other hand, digital pictures taken with a phone and flash tend to distort reality a lot. And those are the pictures you find in a sales Web site. A few months ago, I bought a IIIA that looked ok on photos. When I had it in my hands, the “ok” turned into “really good”.
Ambro51 Posted September 13, 2018 Share #20 Posted September 13, 2018 Yeah...that price is more than fair. Everything has a price. I assume you have many other Leicas on the shelf, or is this your first Barnack adventure?
