It's really nice to see how well the 280/4 APO-Telyt holds up on a 100 Mpx sensor, particularly when clicking through for the highest resolution.

Pete.

Hi Pete. Yes, the 280/4 APO-Telyt-R matches (and likely more so) the 100MP GFX100S sensor. I occasionally see this on the 64MP S3-sensor. Occasionally, since the mirror and shutter curtain slap on the S-system generates vibrations, almost irrespective of which shutter speed being used, reducing the actual resolving power of the lens. If I take many images of the same scene with a S-body, say 10+ images, a few of the images show the resolving potential of the lens (=the cases where, by luck, the shutter/curtain vibration doesn't lead to resonance). With the GFX100S, using electronic shutter and IBIS when handholding the lens, or using electronic shutter and avoiding shutter speeds around 1/30 sec on tripod, I almost always get incredibly sharp & high-resolving images. Very impressive. A mirrorless S-body a la SL2, with IBIS, will show the same. And in contrast to a dummy S-to-GFX adapter, where the aperture of the S-lens has to be preset, a forthcoming (?) mirrorless S-body will, of course, allow full usability of the many wonderful S-lenses.

The mirror lock up on my R8 and R9 makes a big difference with the 500 MR-Telyt, especially if I am using the APO 2X extender. Even with my massive Manfrotto 074B tripod, unless I have its spikes sunk into clay.

I assume that there's no mirror lock-up with the S3, which is a shame.  (Oversight perhaps.)

Pete.

The S-bodies from S006 have mirror lock-up with 2 sec delay. This is fine, but the shutter curtain gives the system a kick. Same on GFX, but here IBIS is the rescue (and the curtain mechanism, the speed and the mass being moved are likely different).

The mirror lock-up on my Pentax 67 makes a massive difference too - perhaps because I shoot 120 Fuji Velvia ISO 50 at f/16 to maximise 300 mm to horizon detail.

Wilson, how do you lock the mirror on the R9?? (I have one)

Thanks

Preben

The top switch/lever on the body next to the lens mount on the RHS (as you look at the front of the body) activates the 'mirror up'.

Normally it points to a white dot. Flick it to point to the up facing arrow. Release the shutter once. This raises the mirror. Release the shutter again and this makes the exposure. Remember the return the lever to the 'dot' position or your next exposure will raise the mirror again.

Use control 1.6 below, more correctly known as "Mirror pre-release"

No wonder, since R8 and R9 have strong mirror slap. A far cry from what one gets from isolated shutters and mirror-moving mechanisms with balancer in Nikon F5 and F6.

The Pentax 67 uses a garage door instead of a mirror I've often thought.

Pete.

Early Hasselblads have a large inertia mirror but later designs incorporated a gliding mechanism that changes the direction of the lifting mirror at last moment and somehow softens the thump. Incredible mechanisms in those wonderful machines.
