I still prefer having a traditional watch on my left wrist with analog hand. IMO much quicker and easier to get a feel for the time than opening up the cell phone display by swiping first and having the miniature clock display in one of the corners. This said, I am not interested in this whatever Leica watch.

Indeed. Severe usability problem with it after you’ve taped over the red dot.

Much as I admire Leica cameras and lenses - even though they're a bit slow in developing e.g. full ranges of lenses for the L mount models - I cannot understand why they devote their relatively scarce resources to the design, production, and marketing of the 'L' watches … especially when first year production is likely to be only c.400 units. Design and prototype manufacture of a quality mechanical watch movement can cost c. €750000 and more  … that's a not inconsiderable investment.

There are much finer watches at that price point. These look like $3000 watches to me.

A lot of folks would say that an M looks like $3000 cameras to them :-)

Montblanc sells similar watches for much less. At such a price i would go for a Jaeger Lecoultre or another famed Swiss watch personally. YMMV.

Or, if it has to be German: Glashütte. ;)

According to Macfilos (link) « I believe that the main announcements will be made on tomorrow evening and will include at least one new camera. As I said earlier in the week, this is likely to be a version of the already available Panasonic TZ200. So no secrets there, other than the recommended list price. I should imagine it will be available without delay. I am now convinced there will be no really surprising news — such as the “Leica CM” mini-SL camera which has been strongly rumoured. This isn’t to say it doesn’t exist, or that it will not be announced later this year or at some time in the future, but I think we can rest easy this week at least ».

Leica marketing has said nothing about new cameras, we got a C-lux (yawn) and Zagato (yuk!), but the hype was driven by Internet rumours, not by Leica themselves. Well, they could have issued a denial, I suppose, but nobody would have believed it . Anyway, it isn't Saturday yet...

Well, they could simply admit and formally state that the M7 is no longer produced. It would be a camera announcement at least..... ;)

It was Dr. Kaufmann who said more potential for the L-mount would be realized in June. Still 2 weeks left.

Watches? Seems an odd move to me. Yes I know they had various relatively cheap 'promotional' watches before but are the kind of watch purchasers with 10K to spend really going to buy a Leica watch over one of the more obvious luxury watch brands? Hmmmm

Imma just ignore the whole watch business. :) Those who think it's weird, just take a look at Leica's website. They are essentially as much a lifestyle brand as a camera company so watches are a natural fit to them.

Developing L makes all the sense. People want mirrorless so it shouldn't come as surprise if that's what's going to be this year's big target of R&D.

I'm perfectly satisfied with what Q does, and frankly I don't see how it would absolutely need a revision at this point. But Q50 with a tiny bit more compact profile would be nice though. But perhaps something that Leica is not going to do. Wouldn't bet on Q getting a sibling at all, ever. L development and  SL2 makes sense.

Why?

Not that long ago (2000-200x), scarf-maker Hermès owned 30% of Leica (and Leica still produces Hermès-edition cameras, on and off). Cameras (mostly PanaLeicas) were sold through the Vail, Colorado, Hermès shop 2002-2006 (at least). And Leica still calls its own shops "boutiques." High-end watches are basically just more "male fashion accessories" - as are Leica cameras in some cases. ;)

One could say Leitz/Leica has been in the "Luxury Fashion Accessory Business" ever since the first gold-and-lizard-skin Luxus camera in the 1920s (Luxus II - 1932). Which itself was based on "Luxus"-finished Leitz opera glasses dating to 1922. Just be glad they occasionally screw up and make serious cameras as well.
