Does the FW reset the counter to zero???

 no.... for once.

we will see if it still can't count past 999

Just spent an hour playing with the zooms, 50/1.4 and 75/2.

Now the AF performance gap appears to have diminished considerably they are a delightful set of optics to use ...... responsive and very accurate .... with faultless image quality.

Once the 16-35 and 35 appears they will be a system that is hard to beat .... even though it's taken a good while coming ....

The update saved mine but on restart didn't show any 'do you want to reload them ' message ...... but they were there on the camera ... unchanged.

What would i do without you??

Thanks man :)

Just took this PRE-FW update with the 50 @ 1.4... went to load FW and battery too low :) After it's done... It will be too dark to fully confirm the change... LOL.

When I bought into the SL I sold my 21mm, 28mm and 35mm M-primes

Even in my worst nightmares I never imagined it would take Leica 3 years to release a 35mm... with a 21mm and a 28mm not even in sight yet...

Luckily the 24-90mm has been optically excellent with fast AF and OIS...

About the 16-35mm, slow and heavy and without image stabilization, not for me...

I’m surprised at how much faster the 50 Summilux AF is after the update.

I have only done a few wide open test shots around the house in lower light and so far don’t see any noticeable change in accuracy.

I wasn’t complaining before but this is a nice improvement.

Pretty cool. I did the update with my 24-90 attached. I left the sd card with the update on it if needed and attached my 50 Summilux and it immediately began the update to the lens software. The change in focusing was noticeable right away. Faster and not any hunting. Whatever they did I commend them.

So is there an improvement to this 3.1 firmware update for those who do not own a 50 Summilux SL or do not shoot jpeg?

I'm wondering if there are any other changes to menus, new features or behavior, improvement on startup time, etc., that you noticed after the upgrade?

Thanks,

n

No, and Leica do not mention anything other than the AF speed/accuracy and jpeg updates.

I think you've got that back to front.

I don't think so. In most autofocus systems the zooms autofocus more quickly than the prime lenses, and the fast primes are often notorious for being slow focussers.

The obvious exception I can think of to that is for the super-telephoto lenses (eg 500 f/4). So the SL systems seems no different to other brands in that regard - the zoom lenses are faster to acquire focus and faster to travel through their focus range if they hunt. (Incidentally, this also seems true for the CL.)

If Donzo98's "good" was purely an assertion about speed of AF then I'd agree but there was no mention of AF in his post so it sounded to me to be about image quality from a fast prime versus a zoom.

Usually they have a switch to limit the focus range to prevent this problem.

Got it! Yep, he was only commenting on AF speed, which was a bit hard to tell I’m isolation but clear hen following the thread “live”, so to speak.

So good having the improved AF on the Summilux 50 now and Leica deserves credit for continuing to improve the camera and lens firmware in meaningful ways. With the 16-35 imminent the system is coming together beautifully.

I will keep dreaming about a 1:1 macro and a long telephoto, but in the meantime the CL is a good teleconverter/small backup body and has a good macro option. Exciting times for those wanting to use a Leica system to replace their DSLR and with the versatility to use all the legacy lenses too.
