Hi,

I've got the cron 35mm f/2 ASPH, the new version.

I got the square black lens hood that came along with it in the box. However, I would love to get a silver one instead just like the Summilux got.

I have no idea if it exists or not since I haven't found a place to buy one, but I've seen photos of the lens with a silver square lens hood. Are they real or just mockup photos?

IF it exists, where can I order it?

Is your lens black or silver?

Is your hood plastic or metal?

Good question! Assumed it was a sensible question from OP. Not sure then what he means by 'like the Summilux got', as no black lens comes with a silver hood!!  Replacement lenshoods are available in black and silver - at a cost.

My silver 35mm Summicron came with a black plastic lens hood. Is this wrong? Should it have been delivered with the silver one?

I've seen a lot of pictures of the lens I got, with this black lens hood that I've got that is.

Did some reading - seems like I have the previous version...

Oh well. That kind of explains it. I guess my new question would be if the new version is worth the extra money? If I should return this and go for the latest version instead?

Sorry for all the confusion. I'm very new to the Leica world. I hope you understand.

You have the previous version Summicron, not the current version which has a threaded lens hood (like the summilux). There's no way to put that type of lens hood on your current lens unfortunately.

I've realized this too.

As I wrote above, sorry for the confusion. Trying to figure all the models out.

Looking at one US main Dealers website, the current brand new 35mm Summicron ASPH in silver is $3395. If you can upgrade, then you will get the silver hood you want. To answer your question on what you paid is difficult without knowing if it was sold you as "new"(old stock). If so, it was a bit naughty of the Dealer not to mention it was not the latest version, as from your opening post you believed it to be "the new version". If it was sold as "used", then price seems high.

I bought it new. Not used.

Then again, I didn't ask since I didn't know. And, I bought it online on a well known site (for Scandinavia).

Will mention it to the support.

You should give that lens back. I think that when you just go into a shop and buy a 35mm Cron you should get the latest version unless you ask for previous. Further the price difference is not so big to accept the old version. I had actually the same when I bought my 28mm. I just learned theat there are multiple versions when I was at home. The dealer replaced without arguing. I paid the price difference of course.

Just talked to support.

They asked me to mail them with my concerns, and they're willing to find a solution for this together.

Feels good. So far.

I just bought the older version new old stock with a 3 year Leica warranty from Classic Connection for $2795, so your price isn’t far off. Be aware that the new chrome version isn’t made out of brass like the older one you have.

Dealers are still selling new/old stock of the previous version. If you bought online presumably you selected that lens and clicked buy, so the dealer wouldn't know if you didn't know what you were buying.

I'd be surprised if they wouldn't exchange it for the new one (assuming you return it undamaged etc). Most countries actually have distance buying consumer regulations so you may actually have a legal right to return it but check your local consumer law.

Personally I prefer the aesthetics of the older one, and having shot side by side with the newer one, I don’t think the improved aperture blades result visibly improved bokeh. The newer lens has ever so slightly warmer colors- a negative in my book.
