My train is booked. I shall arrive in Arnhem around 1520 and take the opportunity to walk around that town and have a coffee there. I will probably come to Nijmegen (Mercure too) around 1800. I will leave early Sunday morning. Looking forward to it already!

No problem, Tom, but by the look of the yellowish picture in your avatar you must be suffering from jaundice so your doctor has probably told you that alcohol won't do your fevered liver any good.

Pete.

I have now moved my reservation to the Mercure in order to sacrifice my own liver and have Tom’s drink, which Pete is buying.

I should arrive early afternoon. Look forward to seeing everyone.

Can I ask a question to the members in the Netherlands please - most of my possible train connections have changing times of 3-4 mins. With the Deutsche Bahn over here, this would be like Russian Roulette.

The risk is of course completely on me, however, how are your experiences with such short changeover times?

Hi Stefan,

Things which happen with Deutsche Bahn, sometimes happen with N.S. too. The Nederlandse Spoorwegen are as inpredictable as the DB. Luckily, there are more trains in an hour sometimes four. Also the trains will connect in most of the combinations on the same platform opposite sides.

To be short...In my experience, one in ten connections are going to be missed. If I know with which train you come, I can give you more direct advise on do and don'ts.

Thanks a lot, Paulus, I'm a bit concerned about the connection in Deventer, which leaves three minutes:

Don't be. It doesn't matter if you have 3 or 30 minutes. Dutch railways always find a way to screw things up for you. Just enjoy the experience :-D

Stefan,

Luckily there are two IC trains per hour on your journey - which gives you a chance to try if the station coffee is equally undrinkable or if it is to the standards of UK railway stations (drunk twice and unfiltered).

On my journey, I have IC for much of it, followed by the slow-train-to-china which takes 90 minutes and makes 14 stops (more like a tram than a train).

See you there. Assuming of course I make my connections too.

Thanks a lot, Paulus, I'm a bit concerned about the connection in Deventer, which leaves three minutes:

You should be. I'm confused. Are you traveling from Nijmegen to Berlin or from Berlin to Nijmegen?

On my last trip to Dresden, I had a delay in the Netherlands due to this " work on the railway " from an hour. And in Köln due to a " Stellwerk " failiure . total delay was 4 hours. I got my money back from DB.

On the other hand. On my way back from München, a was sooner in Tilburg, than the DB and NS predicted following my own route instead of the DB route via Frankfurt Flughafen.

Maybe you can travel by Venlo-Viersen-Berlin because there the work is already over.

As Lunchcaffé " Stoom " replied today, that 25 persons would give an extra chalenge to the menurepertoire, they ask if we would like a simple "burgerlunch" €14.50 per person  Cheese - Classic - Vegetarisch. The burgers will be served with  friet ( frenche fries ) and coleslaw. I will repie them, that this is allright if there are no hard objections.

The restaurant Odessa in the evening asked if there is anyone, who has allergies. Please tell me, when nessesary.

The list you are on implies, that you take part of the dinner, except, unless. nitified behind your name.

Now is the time to cancell dinner if you are not eating with us.

Hi Paulus,

I'll eat (almost) anything, so am fine with the selection.

On the transport side, I found a method to get a longer changing time on the way back, where the impact of missing the next train would be more critical. Travelling in (coming from Hamburg, actually), I will take the risk, since worst case I would have to take the next train to Nijmegen. Thanks for your input, I guess this connection would only work out with Japan Rail.

Well, I hope they rise to the occasion and provide a wholemeal sandwich for me. I'm not a Burger person.

The program uptill now will be, things can change, but don’t count on it. It’s a nice walk but keep in mind, that big parts of the walk are in open air so an umbrella for sun or rain might be in order.

10;30 Meeting near the station. I Have reserved for 20 persons in Cafe van Buren:

Café van Buren Molenstraat 89 6511 HB Nijmegen

We have “windowseats” there or we go on the terras if the weather allows. The café shows of with the fact that our King recently was sitting here, getting drunk together with his student mates.

11:40 We peak in the “Vereniging “ the concert building nearby (still negotiating) where there is a reconstruction at the time. The concert building is renowned with musicians for its great acoustics resembling the famous Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, but smaller.

11.40 uur at the main entrance.

There Irene Verkuijl, co-worker of the “Vereeniging ” will be waiting for us.

We walk around in the building, watching the renovation, which might make nice pictures.  We also walk through the main hall which resembles the “ Concertgebouw”  , Amsterdam in a way. Irene will also tell a little story about the building.

12:15 …Walking to and around the “Valkhof” “distance 800m.

Het Valkhof. “https://nl.wikipedia...eum_Het_Valkhof

https://www.museumhetvalkhof.nl

Or visit an exhibition with bad weather. Walking to downtown Nijmegen. 400m.

to the Market where there will be a Market on Saturday.

Visit the medieval surroundings of the church.

Stroll along the old shops 1000

Walk into the old industrial area of the “Honig“- mill at the Waalbandijk. 1000m.

13:30/14:00 Lunch at “Stoom” or’ Steam”: Waalbandijk 14D 6541 AJ Nijmegen a Burgerlunch or as an alternative a Goat-cheese-avocado sandwich ( is that all right with you Jaap? ) with something to drink. It’s a hipster place so we might meet interesting models.  I reserved for 25 persons.

https://www.stoomnijmegen.com

15:00/15:30 Walking over the railway – bridge (don't complain about the distance, in WWII the allied forces had to row across...) Seeing the waterworks and bridges recently build. And walking the bridges of the new island  ”Veur Lent“. If you really like you can also swim as do people with nice weather here 2500m. So take your swimsuits and towels (but don’t hitchhike with a spaceship…) if you want to. The others can make great pictures of the ones who are swimming.

16:30/17:00 Having some drinks with “bitterballs” on the Island. " Veur Lent ". at Cafe Waalzicht:

This Island is recently made. They dug away a huge pile of sand, making an extra river/lake to give more room for the river and its rising water. I’m bringing an old map to show what has changed.

17:30/18:00 Walking over the bridge, walking towards the 105mm gun a last remnant of “Operation Market Garden” Valkhof. 1800m

19:15/30 Dinner at

Restaurant: Odessa I reserved for 24-25 persons, but I have to know two weeks before the occasion or you are having dinner or not.
