Just in time for the Christmas holiday. If Santa brought you a Thambar, what would be your creative urge to try with the lens? I am taking it tomorrow to a western ghost town and shooting in B&W for the atmosphere. Eric

A CHRISTMAS TREE, with many sparkling Lights, reflecting colored balls etc... as an OOF background for a Holy-Virgin-like face of a sweet woman in foreground, spot center filter on, wide open or next to... enboe Posted December 22, 2017 Author Share #6 Posted December 22, 2017 Also noted in the instructions that the lens is not designed for use on the M8 series cameras. This provides an explanation why no new firmware for those bodies, although I get the 75 Noct will be just fine and require an update. Eric

luigi bertolotti Posted December 22, 2017 Share #8 Posted December 22, 2017 Also noted in the instructions that the lens is not designed for use on the M8 series cameras.... Curios... is the M8 simply "omitted" beween the "supported with" digital Ms, or do they declare that the lens is not "made for" M8 ? I wonder if it is simply for the reason of no-lens recognition on M8 or there's something about the UVIR issue (is there an UVIR filter - Leica branded - for the Thambar filter thread ?) lct Posted December 22, 2017 Share #9 Posted December 22, 2017 F/2.2 is too fast as a 90 on crop rangefinders. Or use it at f/2.8 at least to get enough RF accuracy.

In practice, I agree... but Leica did declare Summicron 90 as a "fit for M8" lens....

I don't recall Leica stating that any Summicron 90 can be focused accurately at full aperture on the M8 but i may be wrong.

Yes, they didn't... but the only focal they explicitly "warned" was 135, iirc...
Eoin Posted December 22, 2017 Share #14 Posted December 22, 2017 my reading of that is ... There are no further updates being made to the M8's firmware, lens detection is unable to recognise the lens because it was created after the last firmware version . Also any in camera corrections for this particular lens do not exist in the last M8 firmware version.
lct Posted December 22, 2017 Share #15 Posted December 22, 2017 Corrections, if any, are minimal for 90mm lenses... Too bad the Thambar is so expensive, i would order one just to use it on my M8.2 .

There are no further updates being made to the M8's firmware, lens detection is unable to recognise the lens because it was created after the last firmware version . Also any in camera corrections for this particular lens do not exist in the last M8 firmware version. The official statement about M8 is : "Use with the Leica M8 models is not recommended since the optical properties do not suit for smaller formats than 35 mm (24 x 36 mm)" So there seems to be something beyond the question of lens recognition... ... I'm not interested in buying the new Thambar, but have the old one... used it on M240 but, iirc, never on M8...at least, haven't even "test pics" in my archives...time to make some in these vacation days... ; I wonder if Leica statement is related to : A)Usage of UVIR filter (btw,Thambar is E49, UVIR filter available, in itself); the Thambar design "plays" on the "un-correction" of some abherrations.. what about chroma... ? or: B)Dimension of the center spot ... related by design to sensor/film dimension...? or : C)Combination of usage of spot filter with UVIR filter... ? Pity that I can't make a complete test with old Thambar on my M8.. have not an UVIR filter for it (and surely won't buy one just for this purpose...) farnz Posted December 23, 2017 Share #17 Posted December 23, 2017 Luigi, I think you make an interesting observation about the relative size of the Thambar's centre spot filter to the M8's cropped sensor size. Pete.
luigi bertolotti Posted December 23, 2017 Share #18 Posted December 23, 2017 (edited) My Thambar is exactly 80 years old... (375.023... 1937) and ,while not "collectors' grade", has anyway a decently clean glass : though being a portrait-oriented lens, I stood away from proposing to one of my daughters to pose for a long test stage... being at home for Christmas... they at least would have asked MONEY for such as annoying task (not to speak of wife... who has more important tasks in these days ) , so I reverted to the always patient flowers.... M8 and M240, different distances (1.3 - 1.8 mtr, around) to compensate for crop sensor... no capabilty to have UVIR filtering on M8... which can partially explain the very significant difference in color balancing... jpg out of camera, but on both I enhanced the contrast (in the same measure for both cameras). ... it's really a very strange lens to use wide open... but anyway, in the context of an anyway "odd" rendering, I cannot conclude that on M8 is "unusable"... Welcome, dear visitor! Why has Leica stated that is not apt for M8 ? Question mark... by sure, won't take one just to verify... epand56 Posted December 24, 2017 Share #19 Posted December 24, 2017 Looks like one's going to get bored very quickly of such a strange kind of pictures. That would be ok with a € 250 lens to be used once in a while. I would not drop 6.000 bucks to deliberately miss my pictures
