A joystick (or small button) is for those who want to use the VF and avoid the touch screen. Apples and oranges, even if that method works well for you.

And unfortunately I can cite many reviews from those with no axe to grind citing buggy operation. More people like you need to get the word out, I guess, cause the picture being painted isn't as rosy.

One of many examples...

Is this any different from Touch AF on the TL2?

It works very differently to the TL2 and exactly the same way as Olympus does it.

When you look through the viewfinder the rear screen turns off and the touch component operates like a big touchpad. Think of it like the touchpad on a laptop. Whichever way you drag your finger the cursor moves, while you are looking through the viewfinder. No need to push any buttons to activate it and you can specify which part of the screen becomes a touchpad. It's a really really good solution. You're not touching a point on the screen to select an AF point (you do that when using the rear screen for framing though). You're dragging the focus position around as if the rear screen was a joystick.

I've had a few bugs but each new firmware release really is squashing them quickly. It's a different camera now. What we need is new reviews that represent the current firmware. It's still got some way to go but it's a very usable camera now. My two week holiday realised about 2000 images on the X1D.

I still have 7 Hasselblad HC lenses (35, 80, 100, 120, 150, 210 and 50-110).  I guess I will hold on to them a bit longer... Hasselblad HC glass is easily found used and not that expensive...

I got deals on the 24, 100, 150 and 210. Really want AF for the 100. :) It's so thin wide open. The other three are simply great. Large but great. I'm especially impressed by the 24 and 150. My 210 is the older version. The rest are the newer versions.

I used to laugh at the frankly amateur design of the X1D firmware and camera system. But now that the firmware is finally up to scratch, it is turning out to be an even more advance camera in someway than the GFX. It has a short flange distance of only 20mm. That will liberate this camera to be the universal digital back/camera system combining with Cambo Actus which I have been try to set up with the GFX but fail in some sense as the GFX flange is 7mm too long so I can't use Canon lens on the system.

XID = 50 megapixels.

S = 37.X  megapixels.

XID lenses work and XID can be used with H lenses or now with adaptor and electronic shutter ( which is too slow @300ms read times) but still ...hello Leica M/Zeis Otus/<Milvus/Hasselblad V lenses and others...

S lenses break down.

S costs much more than XID

hmmmmm

tough choice NOT.

Only people who have not worked with Hasselblad files would ever say the S files are 'better'. Lightroom has worked with Hasselblad files for years....but it is true Phocus deliver better raw conversion...

btw - Hasselblad XID has 30/45 and 90 readily available - and Leica S has only a  30 not 45 or 90 available so umm how was this comparison made exactly by OP...?

Pardon? Available Leica S lenses are: 24mm, 30mm, 35mm, 45mm, 100mm, 120mm (+120mm TS), 180mm, and 30-90mm zoom.

Well........

There is most certainly a 45mm for the S system. Don't know where you got the idea there isn't.

There is a permanent fix for the S lenses. It's been in place for several months. All new manufactured lenses have the new part. Broken lenses are serviced for free.

S adaptors are available for HC, V and Contax lenses. Some maintain AF as well. Plus the S has a reasonably complete range of lenses. rarely need an adapted lens.

The S has a 100mm. Close enough to the 90 and it's faster by a stop and a half. S lenses are the benchmark for miniMF lenses. The X1D lenses are great but the S lenses are better. And faster. And with better blur characteristics. Each lens is also available in a FP version to give a higher shutter speed OR CS version (except the zoom and 100). Plus there's a full range (10 lenses). The X1D has three and the fourth is two months late. Almost zero chance there will be the lenses Hasselblad promises, when they promise them.

The X1D firmware is still in the advanced beta stage. Improving? Definitely. Finished? Definitely not. Everything is faster on the S. And it have 4 times the battery life.

In the real world there's something about those S lenses. The difference in IQ is small. 37.5 to 51 isn't that big in real world usage. Non-existent if you like the 2:3 ratio.

Unlike most, I actually own both cameras.......

The difference in IQ is small. 37.5 to 51 isn't that big in real world usage.

But the price of X1D/GFX is 2-3 times cheaper.

here in Oz it's 1/2 of an S for an X1D. The Fuji and Pentax are cheaper again. Not entirely unusual for Leica to be the most expensive option. OTOH most of the X1D lenses aren't that cheap. 2/3 of the Leica equivalent and slower. Fujis lenses are better value. And they're great. Just strapped to a bigger body.

However I do agree that Leica need to do something about the S system. They can't rely on those lenses alone and it's clear that the system is stagnated, currently.

The price and being mirrorless are exactly why I am investing in the X1D system. I'd love to be able to use those lenses on a mirrorless S.

The new X1D lenses sound great.

35-70 f3.5

135 f2.8

80 f2 or faster (rumour is 1.4!)

I'm really starting to get interested in this now. It does feel like the system of the future.

The future is right. I'm not betting any of those lenses will be available on time.

But when they do come out it'll make for a spectacular travel system. I loved the X1D in Cuba. Even with some manual focus glass to make up for the lack of AF options.

I need another camera like a large hole in my head but when this first came out I was impressed by its weight compared to the S or even the SL. What turned me off were the reports of its initial performance and lots of bugs. The consensus was that Hasselblad released the camera way too early before all of the software was finalized. Not sure it is the best way to introduce a new camera but they did. I have read where more folks now like the X1D and I guess sales have suffered because of the initial reports. I am really tempted but as I said I need another camera like a LARGE hold in my head.

The wife says if I get this, I cannot have that new Porsche!!!!!
