Beautiful Topsy, may I ask how you calculate  exposure?

Saludos amigos!

Thanks Rbberto, I tend to go with the meter in the camera but favour the highlights then lift the shadows in post. If I am unsure I will take a second shot at 1/2 a stop less to be sure of the highlights. I always shoot manual focus and decide which part of the frame is most important rather than the fiddly aperture priority and exposure compensation. TBH I find the M9 meter quite accurate this way.

I find M9 meter very reliable too. A picture like that is a challenge even in the digital era

Pilgrimage to the film location of First Blood (1982) Part 1

The iconic movie, now commonly referred to as Rambo: First Blood, was filmed in Canada 40 years ago.

The town of Hope, British Columbia, where much of the on-location filming took place, doubled for the fictional town of Hope, Washington State.

Getting to appreciate the life sized, finely detailed and expressive wooden statue of Rambo, carved by Edmonton artist Ryan Villiers, is definitely worth the pilgrimage in and of itself for Rambo fans. But there’s more.

The movie’s fictional town of Hope, WA, would have been located somewhere in the north eastern part of the Olympic Peninsula (based on a scene inside a State Police/National Guard tent, where a map shows the marked terrain where they thought Rambo was  hiding).

Located only about 150 miles north east from the Olympic Peninsula, Hope, BC shares the same Pacific Northwest climate, and similar geography. With Vancouver, also known as “Hollywood North”, being only a two hour drive away, this location was therefore ideally suited for filming the movie.

Visiting Hope, BC and the dramatic locations of the movie, felt like a trip down memory lane, despite this being the first time I had visited some of these locations (and almost 40 years after I had first seen the movie on screen). The vivid and dramatic landscapes in the movie had been seared in my memory, giving me sense of deja vu in visiting these place in real life.

Today, the town looks uncannily similar to the movie and maintains the original quiet, rustic charm, although the stores now look more touristy and slightly more gentrified than those depicted in the movie. There are no high rise buildings, and the town still mostly consists of single or double story buildings.

Pilgrimage to the film location of First Blood (1982) Part 2

A short drive away from Hope is the Coquihalla Canyon Provincial Park, which doubled for Chapman Gorge, where the dramatic cliff hanging action took place.

Alongside the canyon are the famed Othello Tunnels, which also served as locations for the movie.

Pilgrimage to the film location of First Blood (1982) Part 3

On the drive form Hope to Coquihalla Canyon, I came across what I thought was a key prop from the movie outside the Coquihalla Campground parking lot.

It turned out this “Gateway to Holidayland” sign was a copy of the original prop, albeit a good one.

Much to my delight, I discovered that the original prop has been partially preserved in another nearby location:

Here’s the scene of Rambo in the firearm store.

The statue of Rambo looks faithful to movie and garnered the approval of Stallone himself.
