FWIW I do really like the M9 colours, but what I personally find lovely about the M9 files is the tonality, the way light parts roll off and the dark parts glow a little, and best of all IME (OMMV) is that you either get these colours and tonality from the get go (and editing just enhances them) or you don’t and that’s that.

That’s in sunlight, electric light can be a different story…

IIRC the M240 release lead to thousands of internet words about magic CCD vs shitty CMOS, a well publicised article by Farkas (with a 240-to-m9-look preset) and a petition to Leica to reinstate CCD

So whatever early adopters of the 240 thought about the m9 it didn’t resonate with everyone 😏🤣

This actually makes a lot of sense and I’ve often wondered if my way of shooting (deliberately underexposing quite a bit because if there’s one thing I hate it’s burned out highlights) caused me not seeing saturated colours in my photos.

This got me thinking about the M9 and its colours, after all the colours is IIRC the thing people most mention about the look of the M9

So I trawled through my M9 flickr album and here we go!!

So first up a fun one!!

M9 (well dur) + summarit 35 circa May 2019

Same place, only this time with the CV 35/1.7 and taken about 18 months later

For my opinion the first shot is very much what I think folks mean by "M9 look" and the second not so much tbh... in fact the second I had to double check it wasn't the M10 😅 not intending that as a slur on the M10 you understand!

I think this is more kinda how I generally PP images (based on my exposure choices anyway) rather than any specific M9 look.

Same for the next one

I'm not sure whether to describe this one above as 'saturated' (obviously not so much for my personal tastes)...

Here red and green are maybe a bit too saturated.. but there's enough non-saturated colours in the shot to suggest that the M9 is not necessarily an overly saturated camera IMHO

Here where I've desperately tried not to clip D1 (and still managed an effing shit load of glare on the target, making it no good for profiling 🙄) I think it looks quite a lot over saturated

But if I take the same shot and edit it (+1/3 expo and +5 shad and +40 wht)

to try and broadly match how I personally expose/PP

I think I get the more pastel type colours that can be seen in my pictures shared above.

Of course this is just me rambling on and re-sharing images that are already in the thread!

Thanks Ian, this got my mind going a bit!

Hi guys,

Long time reader, novice poster. :)

I got into the Leica world by accident - traded my Pentax 645D for M9 with 28 Cron, because I was very unhappy with Pentax. I was interested to try Leica but never thought that it would keep my interest long enough. Boy, I was wrong... I was blown away by rangefinder and the different approach to the image capturing, simplicity and ergonomics of the menus, low weight, fantastic optic and I (still) love that shutter sound that many others hate. I still have and use and love my first Leica M9, despite having a fantastic M10-R (which can mimic M9 colors very close in my experience) and M10-M. I even bought a second body with new sensor just in case (my original M9 started to show extremely small corrosion only a year ago).

That photos was taken in June 2015, right after I picked up my M9 and 28 Cron.
