james.liam Posted July 5, 2017 Share #61 Posted July 5, 2017 Advertisement (gone after registration) ....But ...... in the world of expensive Leica glass, worth the four Benjamins. Where to drop an extra 4 Benjamins is of course a personal decision. A few weeks back, I landed a CV 3,5/28 with 4 B's. If I had a few more, it'd go toward an UWA Cosina and not an unknown quantity from a dubious place. Just me. I would be curious however, what the inner workings of the thing look like. Maybe someone with another 4B's to spare can vivisect one for the Curious...

Ecar Posted July 5, 2017 Share #62 Posted July 5, 2017 Yep. The "fiasco" behind the Hyperprime was one of community derision and mistrust, more than it was lens quality. It's biggest problem was the stigma associated with being a Chinese lens with no reputation. It was a capable lens that had the gall to present itself as a Noctilux alternative. Well, not quite. I have seen/handled one in the flesh and at least that particular sample did have some construction issues, which were not acceptable at a price point which, while well below that of a Noctilux, was still a fairly substantial one.
Ko.Fe. Posted July 5, 2017 Share #63 Posted July 5, 2017 Its cheaper! Why else produce such a lens? Old Leica glass is still costly. Old Leica glass is also prone to fungus, separation and fog. Just like old lenses from Japan (which was the China back then). Old glass problems are common, except old FSU lenses. Yes, they are not as punchy on negative as Leitz glass and made more flimsy, but FSU lenses from fifties are in much better condition optically now.
FrozenInTime Posted July 5, 2017 Share #64 Posted July 5, 2017 Just arrived Build quality and handling seem good ; exceeds expectations so far Will take a few days for samples as I'm digital M challenged right now; M9-P in for sensor upgrade, and others traded for M10 which is unlikely to appear anytime soon

laowai_ Posted July 6, 2017 Share #66 Posted July 6, 2017 The thing with China is when you think you've got it all figured you turn around and see exactly the opposite, or like Lucian Pye puts it: "China is a civilization pretending to be a nation-state". Some of the most successful consumer product come out of China and an awful lot of junk. In China you'll find a whole optics valley around Wuhan with an army of folks folks working optical, opto-electronics and precision mechanics, you've got cutting edge glass research at places like the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, in fact some folks believe that as early as 2007, China surpassed the US in glass research. I guess, most of the efforts in optics and fine mechanics during the last 30 years has been focused on large non-imaging optics markets such as the fiber optic components foodchain (most lasers and other components that run the internet are manufactured in China these days, requires sub-micro meter precision and high reliability requirements in volume production!), high power industrial lasers, semiconductor processing equipment to some extend, etc.. There's a lot of me-too products but also a lot of highly innovative ideas coming out of China these days! Based on that, sooner or later we'll see top-notch consumer imaging products come out of China. We'll have to see if 7artisans is the on. If there's money to be made, someone in China will do it.

DezFoto Posted July 8, 2017 Share #68 Posted July 8, 2017 Mine arrived a couple of days ago, calibrated it last night. There's a bit of focus shift between f/1.1 and f/1.4, but not too bad. A lot of "glow" (spherical aberrations) at f/1.1 but it mostly goes away by f/1.4. It was smaller and lighter than expected and the build quality is not great (there's a bit of roughness in the focus and aperture rings). Oddly, coma and chromatic aberrations are reasonably well corrected, flares like a mofo though.
Rus Posted July 8, 2017 Share #69 Posted July 8, 2017 Would people who have already got this lens mind posting a few sample photos taken by it? I'm sure they will be of great help and interest to quite a few of us there Many thanks!

FrozenInTime Posted July 9, 2017 Share #72 Posted July 9, 2017 From the first film I developed, the focus cam seems to be reasonably well calibrated out of the box for f/1.1 at 1m and 2m. M6 + PlusX - focus on the 'I' in Fire

FrozenInTime Posted July 10, 2017 Share #78 Posted July 10, 2017 From yesterday morning, the lens seems to be focusing well on the M6 across a wide range of distances ( tested at f/1.1 and f/5.6 ) These were all taken with a 55mm ND8 filter on the lens f/1.1 f/1.1
FrozenInTime Posted July 10, 2017 Share #79 Posted July 10, 2017 Complex out of focus structure however seems something to avoid. f/1.1 f/1.1 f/5.6:
Ecar Posted July 10, 2017 Share #80 Posted July 10, 2017 Mine arrived today: purchased directly from China on the bay, best offer price accepted immediately and free DHL shipping - pretty cool. In a nutshell: - construction feels solid - "felt" in lens cap actually seems like a cheap rubber band and barely holds the cap in place (I'll have to fix that) - aperture ring with no click stops can feel very slightly gritty when the camera/lens is held at an angle - focus wide open is properly calibrated with a hint of back focus at very close distance (I'll try the adjustment feature later to see if it can be improved) - there also seems to be a small amount of focus shift. Here are a few test pictures (M10, all @f/1.1, straight OOC with default conversion in LR): Welcome, dear visitor!
