Wish list for future S

I think Leica should release a SE version of the current model, at a lower price, directed at the semi-pro/dedicated amateur market. Remove/disable tethering, CS triggering, external cable control and a few other bells%whistles, price point <10 Kusd. Possibly in a bundle with the 70, but there are used lenses out there at decent prices.

For the next S, I think +50 mpix is necessary, mainly for marketing purposes, longer shutter speeds would be fine, but I don't need half an hour. Higher ISO mainly for extended usage scenarios - you need a certain minimum shutter speed for this animal to show its strengths.

Personally, but this is a firmware issue, I would like to have "006 mode" where the wheel is not disabled for shutter adjustment while preview is active. I know I can get there by half-pressing the shutter, but in stressed situations this often just leads to another shot.

I personally don't need more pixel than 37M since I am mostly shooting prime lenses, many time I found myself stitch image together when condition allowed, 37M is plenty for that. Then, why is it in my must list? It is all about competition and market pressure, there is no way Leica can come away with it.

Remove physical linkage of shutter speed on dial is one of biggest complain I had with S007. I don't know others, for me, I don't need a feature rich camera such as video, lots of AF point, digitized DOF in LCD, fast tracking etc, I have plenty choice for those. Thus, A few thing S007 over S006 are minor to me and my other gear happen doing better, more reliable and at much lower price point. S007's LV is big plus though.

Thank you for participating, looks like not a huge challenge for Leica keep their current customers or draw new customers in.

I hope they can confront the AF issue and improve the reliability, rebuild customers trust. S will still be a succes as years ago S2. As a niche. They don't need sell a lot to be profitable.

-Want Leica to keep the optical viewfinder. For those who need an electronic viewfinder, additionally to the OVF, let's have an option of sliding an EVF in the hot shoe.

-Make the camera lighter

- reliable focus bracketing

- 80 mpx

- 55/3.5 light travel lens

- а 1,4 Tele-convertor for The S70mm - S180mm lenses.

- keep Contax645 and НС/ HCD lenses in an adaptation mode.

3. Long exposure? Yes for star trails. But I don't do them.

Long exposures are for much more than star trails. In landscape photography, you routinely use them, both around the golden hour and during daytime for expressive effects. The 1 minute allowed by the S 007 is simply inadequate.

I do not want 35 AF points in the viewfinder

They work rather well on the SL though, and on the Q...

You can choose between 1, 5, 37 and 49 focus points and you can also hide them altogether.

Whenever I go back to the S (which is pretty rare) it feels rather antiquated with its one central focus point...

And they also work great with the S lenses on the SL via the adaptor.

I am a landscape photographer, and would not do a 30 minute exposure during the "short golden hour moment" anyway, because the light changes so quickly that it wouldn't make much sense. Plus, a 30+ minute exposure without NR wouldn't look too great, I am afraid. To me, the utility of turning NR off is exactly for the opposite situations, exposure-length wise: if I had it, I'd use it for 2-5 minutes exposures, exactly during the golden hour when you don't have time to loose and for exposures of 2-5 minutes where noise is not as problematic.

Best,

Vieri

Hi, Vieri,

I have shooting up to 5 mins without NR on with D810 without any noise problem. I believe Nikon already implement some noise reduction in their DSP with certain shutter speed detected without mandatory black frame subtract.  I seldom do more than 3 mins exposure so I am not an expert on this, but with either nikon or Sony system, I always turn off NR. Leica's implementation is PITA in the field. 10 Sec is too long already during Golden hour.

Alternatively, If Leica can implement something similar to Sony's Smooth reflection feature, it will be also a very useful features as it eliminate both ND filter and noise reduction need if you made multiple images and each image has much shorter exposure time than NR required.

I love Sony's smooth reflections app. That would be INSANE on the S007. It'll never happen but what a brilliant idea.

p.s. I do 8 minute exposures on the Pentax 645Z with no dark frame and no noise issues at low ISO. Made some nice big prints too.

I wish for...

A 100mp CMOS sensor with 6 micron pixels which should increase DR by at least one stop...

I would also like a 300mg fixed telephoto and a 100-300 zoom lens.

Finally, please add WORLD PEACE to the list..

Albert  ;)  :D

We will never have world peace... at least not in the camera world.

300mg of fixed telephoto, is that a prescription?  :)

I don't understand the comment about a higher resolution sensor proving more dynamic range though. Normally the reverse is the case at the most basic design level. . What we do know from Peter Karbe is that the S sensor actual dimensions cannot be larger (more than 30mm x 45mm) but the lenses' potential performance already exceeds what the current sensor can resolve. I won't be surprised if any new generation sensor for a hypothetical new S is higher resolution, certainly. However I really value the current DR

We can all agree on the World Peace wish in any case!

I also wish for more AF points, resolution is fine for me, pixels are fine for me as well. A more compact 35 or 45mm lens would be nice.

I dont really know what else I would want to be improved. Ahh, maybe a 30mm TS lens would be great.

I want an adapter for the Fuji GFX as next S ..........

This said, for me the next S may look like:

- 40-50 mp

- weather sealed

- EVF

- better ISO performance

- more afordable.

- a monochrome version of that.

So to  resume it for me a "blown up" SL would do it for me, even with a Sony sensor (even if I hate 4/3)

I must say about the price that as much I love the S-system, which I have almost from the beginning, the price for the camera itself is much to high. The time has changed over the last years, with excelent high performance camera offerings in MF and 35 mm as well, and with Leica neglecting the S-system, I find myself with mostly devaluated lenses and cameras. I cannot justify to spend another 15 k on a new camera, it is actually a better investment to sell all S-lenses with a hughe loss and get two GFX instead, which is not bad either.

When the S-system started, it was a unique offering, but this is over now. To make it shine again, they have to be more inovative, and if I could choose, I would do it like described: A SL-clone with bigger sensor, under 10 k, with a b&w variant for the same price.

I'd personally like to see (if they keep the S as a dslr)....

- minimum 60mp sensor to benefit very large prints and subjects with fine detail (e.g.landscapes).

- a minimum 60mp would also create a sufficiently large resolution gap to see a clear difference against the existing S cameras.

- sensor aside, I like the rest of the current S007

- keep the S007 (maybe with 70mm) as a cheaper SE combo to lure people into the S system

The rendering of the S007 is about the nicest I've seen out of a digital camera. It reminds me of drum scanned medium format film (but cleaner and with higher acuity), a rendering that I really like, and not something that I'd say is the case for many other digital cameras that I've tried. I do think the Hasselblad X1D produces a very very good rendering too though (I took my own raws and processed them via phocus before getting large prints done). I also tried playing with the Fuji GFX raw files yesterday and put them through silkypix - but so far I haven't found a rendering that I like at all from it (admittedly the raws were random ones on the internet, and I'm new to that raw processor).
