I have been enjoying the contributions from all of you in this thread since I joined this forum. Quite some time ago, I notice.

What I have been wondering about and I hope you don't mind me asking, is why some of you have some lenses being converted to M-mount.
Especially when versions of the lens in question do exist in M39 mount.
And even so, there are easier (read cheaper and less complicated) methods to use these lenses with an adapter on, for instance L-mount.

Just curious 🤔

Interesting question. As a “heavy user” of converted lenses, here’s my take:

  • I enjoy trying out various optical designs and many vintage lenses simply do not exist in LTM – or were made in numbers so small that they are virtually impossible or prohibitively expensive to find in good condition (TBH, I don’t think there are that many pictures shown in this thread that were shot with converted lenses that were also available in LTM...)
  • conversions based on modern helicoids sometimes offer added benefits, such as closer focus distance or shorter focus throw
  • I like using a rangefinder, so the L-mount (or Sony, or whatever) is out of the question for me – at least as long as my eyesight allows... Under torture, however, I would confess to using the EVF on occasion 😉
  • also, just like some people collect (and use) cars, watches, pens or handbags, I find the hunt for unusual/rare lenses to be a fun process.

Thank you for explaining your reasoning.
I do like using rangefinders obviously, but I also use (D-)SLR's and a mirrorless camera and I use that one especially with M42 lenses, like for instance this Ultron.
I'm not tempted to use the EVF instead of the rangefinder since I don't have that :) (M9-P and the original Monochrom)

I thought I noticed some s-mount nikkors pass the revue that also exist in M39 but I definitely could be mistaken.

I still have the M9P and M9M as well. They see little use, but it's hard to let these wonderful CCD sensors go...

I see. The thing is, there are numerous variations of the S-Nikkor RF lenses, with slight (but often noticeable) optical differences. Some of these S-mount versions were not made in LTM but can be used with an adapter that will provide RF coupling on an M body (see example below). Although they are not truly *converted*, this is perhaps what you are referring to. In addition to the elusive 21/4, the only S-Nikkor that comes to mind that is not available in LTM and that cannot be mounted on an adapter is the 2005 re-issue of the 35/1.8. This lens does require a full, custom-made conversion for use on an M body. Arguably tough, its rendering remains very close to that of the original 35/1.8, which does indeed exist in LTM. And in case you are wondering, yes, Nikkor RF lenses can easily become a rabbit hole...😉

Bart,

I have some lenses both in LTM and Nikon S mount or Contax RF mount .

With the appropriately RF calibrated adapters, I enjoy shooting the non LTM lenses at nearer focussing distances and these lenses often end up being lighter than  their LTM versions .

And I can shoot the lenses on their original Nikon S bodies ...
