I don’t have the Leica screw versions, but I do have a 1949 Zeiss 85mm f2 and an early 50’s Nikon 85mm f2. I haven’t compared the results together. The Nikon is smaller but heavier than the post war Zeiss which is lighter than the pre war version as it has an aluminium body.

in my experience, only the Zeiss-Opton T 85/2 gets close to the Nikkor in terms of flare resistance.

Hi, Ecar, thank you for your very kind complement.

I've been keeping an eye on the Zeiss Opton 85/2 Sonnar for a number of years but what has stopped me is that I already have two Carl Zeiss Jena 85/2 Sonnars, one in Contax mount that I use with an Amadeo adaptor and the other is (I believe) an original LTM mount.  I think you might have very kindly tipped the balance for me and it's time I owned an Opton. ^_^

The picture below was taken with the Contax mount one and is the picture I posted in the opening post of this thread but after 7,700 posts and 9 years I hope it's not too early to post it again.🙂

Pete.

Since I don't want to be held responsible for any disappointment😉, I went out earlier this morning and took a couple of quick - and unremarkable - shots with the Opton 85/2 on the M10M. The 2nd one in particular I wouldn't have been able to achieve with my pre-war CZJ 85/2 without it being ruined by flare.
The Opton will give you significantly improved flare resistance and a slightly larger area of center sharpness - a generally more usable lens. You will lose the glow and the charming, dreamy look from the CZJ.
And FWIW I prefer my vintage Sonnars in Contax mount (not that you really have a choice with the Optons), with a good Amedeo adapter. This includes the wartime 50/1.5. Between inherent Sonnar focus shift and slight focal length and helicoid deviations, the LTM versions can be an adjustment headache on such fast designs. Unless, of course, one is happy to use the EVF or LV for focusing. Oddly, the FSU copies (ZK, J-3, J-8 or J-9) seem to be somewhat easier to sort out. Brian's views on this would be interesting.

@franz, been meaning to ask this for a while: would the previous version of the 28 summicron be accepted in this thread?

Technically perhaps but I would suspect not. I bought it new and although I feel old, not that old yet

Hi @Bart D, as I wrote in the opening post of the thread "There's no restriction on the type of lens except that it should not be the current model" so version 1 of the 28/2 Summicron-M asph qualifies because the current model is now the version 2.

Pete.

M240-MP; 85mm Jupiter 9 F2 . With this lens you get enough saturation out of the box, no need to look for an M9 :)
