farnz Posted November 12, 2012 Author Share #463 Posted November 12, 2012 ...is that lens damaged in some way? Is that the way photos taken with a 1936 Leitz Summar are supposed to look?... I'm guessing that it's an uncoated lens so shooting into the light (contra jour) is likely to produce the lens flare that you see in the first two pictures but shooting away from the light in the third picture shows no flare. IkarusJohn Posted November 13, 2012 Share #470 Posted November 13, 2012 Elmar 135/4 from 1960, shot last Saturday (a promotion called Push-a-mate-off-a-cliff day, where we have a discounted one day introduction). The blue glider is a tandem. ISO 100 @ 1/1600 s, about f/8 I think, on a NEX-5n. Welcome, dear visitor! farnz Posted November 13, 2012 Author Share #471 Posted November 13, 2012 ... The blue glider is a tandem. ... I feel sure I remember a glider being a sleek, silent, engineless aircraft with long wings and what's shown here being what you'd use if matters pertaining to the glider took a turn for the worse. farnz Posted November 14, 2012 Author Share #473 Posted November 14, 2012 We call those "sail planes" Oh well that's changed then from times I spent in the 1970's gliding with Dick Georgeson near Irishman Creek in the MacKenzie Country (South Island). Sound's like an American term. Pete.
IkarusJohn Posted November 14, 2012 Share #474 Posted November 14, 2012 Not sure where the term comes from. When I started PG in the early 1990s, the term "glider" was very confusing. The most commonly accepted distinctions are paragliders, flex-wings, rigids and sailplanes - all gliders.
menos I M6 Posted November 14, 2012 Share #475 Posted November 14, 2012 Now beat this rendering with one of the modern optics Mr. Karbe ;-) portrait - woman in backlight by teknopunk.com, on Flickr It's the same uncoated Summar, as the post before, but into the light! I am of the strong opinion, Leica NEEDS to produce a second line of lenses with modern built and ergonomics but classic optical formula and classic single (or even entirely without) coating! The same way, I sold most of the latest Leica lenses, I tried, I would likely love and buy them all, if they resembled the old lenses (Blackstone, are you listening).

philipus Posted November 14, 2012 Share #477 Posted November 14, 2012 We call those "sail planes" Fwiw, in Swedish (and I believe also German) this is also the term used. John, very nice to see an old Elmar being put to good use. And Dirk, you must stop posting photos from that Summar it renders beautifully! I think I must soon get one. They're hard to find though, it seems.
