Is it ? I hope not, I'm planning on getting one soon. I have made up my mind and will get the MP rather than an M-A.

I was told some US dealers  have had orders in since summer for the MP black .72 and still have not gotten one.

The MP does seem to have gone in and out of stock at dealers a number of times during the last five years or so and, most times this happens, rumours then begin that the camera has been discontinued.

I've owned the MP a couple of times and, whilst I do prefer my M-A cameras, I will happily acknowledge that the MP in black paint (in it's standard configuration) is a modern design classic and is certainly worthy of being the last 35mm film camera (if it ever comes to that :o ).

Agree Ian. I bought 2 black paint MPs from R G Lewis when they were first launched.  And then bought the black paint 35 Summicron asph and 50 Summilux. Sadly all are long gone now, but I have recently obtained another BP 35 Summicron asph.

I still think the black paint MP is a thing of utter beauty.  My good friends at Red Dot have 2 in stock at present.....sorry, as of just now that's now one in stock.  And this time it's here to stay.....

With the lens I use 75% of the time.   Favourite films are Portra 160, Ektar, Ilford Delta 100 and Adox Silvermax.

I'm not sure if this is a sign, but at the moment the MP is no longer listed on the Leica Mayfair site!

I see the price inches higher (I recall the introductory price around 2003 was about £1850) but it still strikes me as good value compared with the asking price for other Leica cameras.

It's on their webpage now, along with 14 tracking scripts, including a "Cross-Site Scripting Attack" that re-directs to:

I have an M10 and I use it, in aperture priority mode with auto ISO and white balance.

It takes good, sharp pictures but I feel like I've cheapened the whole experience without going through the exercise of exposure, focus and wind-on with each shot.

Doing all that and nailing it with the MP was a source of pride, kind of like catching a trout bare-handed out of a stream

Ok, so the ones that recently bought a MP will have to wait. I mailed Leica about the waiting list for the MP and they say that even its still in production, demand is very high but factory are only sending 25% of that demand. Also the waiting list is long.  This is the mail:

"Thank you for your e-mail and for the clarification. In effect, the Leica MP 0.72 (item No. 10302) is still manufactured, but the quantities that we receive monthly are minimal.

This month, for example, we expected to receive a certain amount and we will only receive 25% of it, that is, we will have certain difficulties in satisfying the demand, on the other hand we have a relatively high waiting list.

It is very likely that you have to wait a bit to receive your product, but I can tell you that B & H is one of our best distributors in the United States, which will give you excellent customer service.

Do not hesitate to consult me for any other questions that may arise."

Have to wait for it now...

Perspective:

In the dozen years since I bought my MP and used it almost every day without a problem or a need for adjustment or repair so far, most M8's & M9's have probably either died, been repaired or are in the process of both.  Over the next dozen years, my MP will see them all off, including most M240's, Monochroms and M262's and many M10's will also have given up the ghost or will be showing their age in various ways by then.

I've you're a committed film photographer, treating yourself to a new MP or M-A isn't bad value at all in Leica currency.  I could probably sell mine now for around the same amount that I paid Robert White for it in April 2006, but that isn't going to happen.

Playing devil's advocate here; one can argue whilst the cost of acquiring a new digital M is high, in the long run the cost of film, developing and time spent printing/scanning is also high.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of analog photography.  But doing the math it actually is more expensive than digital on a long enough time line.

my thinking also.

I moved mostly to digital, but still use film for special situations

I do regular rolls for example of our newborn - unique pictures of a unique moment

But I no longer come back from a trip with bags of rolls to develop ..

I only shoot film (again).

I shot digital (Nikon D70, D200, D3, Df, Leica M9, Canon D5) in the years 2004-2014, but missed the joy of film & analog camera. Now i'm back to film (build my own darkroom), i'm cured from GAS. It was my own and personal trip to discover things about myself and my love for photography. Burned a lot of money in buying and selling gear. Although the M9 was by far my favorite digital camera, i prefer the analog workflow.

It's a matter of preference. Some people play a Steinway, others play an electric keyboard. Both have 88 key's, 56 white, 32 black. One isn't right and the other wrong, they are just different, different ways of recording in what you are feeling and seeing.
