Does any of you use it as your only 28mm? Or is it too limiting?

Considering switching my 28mm Elmarit ASPH v2 for the Summaron. My preferences are drifting towards less digital/clinical sharp look and more organic character. 28mm Summicron ASPH v1 could be another possible route.

Only you can answer.

In my view depend on the camera, if using high ISO possible/acceptable, f/5.6 is not that slow.

Summaron-M is not THE 28mm to have, if you plan to have only one 28mm.

If it's the only one, user would like having more opening in some cases, like isolating subjects.

I'm lucky to have (too many ! ) choices of 28mm M lenses,

without counting the only "variable field" Tri-Elmar-M 35-28-50, or LTM lenses,

the nice thing is each has it's own characters, not one is "universal".

I wouldn’t have it as my only 28mm for a couple of reasons; the f5.6 maximum aperture and the vignette can sometimes work against the image particularly with films that have a narrow exposure latitude such as Ektar and transparency films.  There are times when my v2 Summicron safari is the better option for me, but it depends on your own aspirations with a 28mm lens.

Not sure what ‘organic’ differences (no idea what that means!) you’re expecting to see between the v1 & v2 28mm summicrons, since you specifically mention the v1, but I had a v1 for many years until I bought the v2 mainly for the sliding hood.

IMO the differences are so small that it makes no appreciable difference to the output, especially in prints.  Both the V1 & v2  28mm summicron asph lenses are excellent and fall conveniently in size and maximum aperture between the 28mm summilux if you don’t need the bulk and weight or f1.4  and the slightly smaller (but not smaller enough to be of much consequence) v1& v2 28mm elmarits which are a stop slower at max aperture.

In your situation, I’d keep the v2 elmarit asph that you currently have and get the 28mm summaron-m to use alongside it for a while.  You should then be able to make an informed decision on what to do.

not gonna be my only 28mm but so far it has only been my only 28mm because, im not a 28mm shooter most of the time and i have my 35mm summicron for that wider aperture

but it would be lovely to have a 28 summicron at least

the most limiting factor is that 5.6, i need that shallow dof , though i could live for a roll of film aka 36 exposures, i doubt i could go further

anyway, it still is my only 28mm lens to date (i was used to Q's before getting rid of it and jump on the summaron)

Good thing with this lens is the subtle colors separations

I would not want my 28mm threaded-mount Summaron to be my only 28mm lens, because I will often use a Version III Elmarit-M at apertures wider than f/5.6, due to lighting conditions. Of course, each of the four pre-ASPH Elmarit versions has its own “character.” (I have 25mm and 35mm Zeiss ZM lenses, for “sharpness,” which may be why I have not felt a need for a “clinical” or “sharp” 28mm lens.)

That's what I did. Had the Elmarit asph 2,8 and bought the Summaron as the second 28mm lens to decide after a while. I think I will keep them both. Both are great --in their particular properties.
