Ouroboros Posted October 2, 2018 Share #1075 Posted October 2, 2018 (edited) MP, 28mm f/5.6 Summaron-M, Portra 400 16_ird_lcf_004.jpg From what I'm seeing in the images posted on this thread, this lens seems to reveal the character of some films better than any other lens I can think of. None of the Portra images used here are matched by any of the digital Leica images. I'm not saying the digital Leica images are bad, I'm saying the film images, especially the Portra ones, seem to have something extra. ianman Posted October 3, 2018 Share #1076 Posted October 3, 2018 I have not tried any other film than Portra 400 with this lens. I may at some point, just to see, but I think that the combination is fantastic. These were taken a few days a go during my never ending quest for possible fashion shoot locations... both are MP, 28mm f/5.6 Summaron-M, Portra 400 (rated @ 320), no pp. (why do I always see the paper bag after taking the shot? )
wattsy Posted October 3, 2018 Share #1077 Posted October 3, 2018 I'm a little bit loath to agree with the above but only because of the danger of it becoming part of a more general film v. digital thing. I've stated in the thread from the beginning that the lens seems particularly suited to film and also very well suited to Portra 400 (admittedly I've only used 3 colour emulsions with this lens). I only started using the lens with a digital camera after a year of using it exclusively with film and, as much as I have wanted the M240/Summaron-M combination to work, I do find it lacking. I have taken a few photographs that I like (and even one or two that I think have benefited from having been taken using the digital camera) but, generally speaking, I find my best digital photos with this lens fall well behind my favourite film photographs taken with this lens. (In truth, I have possibly taken more "keeper" digital photos at the 28mm focal length with my iPhone than I have with the Summaron-M and digital M.) I wish I knew exactly what it is about the M240 photos that can make them so relatively lifeless using the Summaron. My best guess it is that there is too much resolution – detail is drawn too literally – and that the inherent linear tonal curve of a digital file doesn't play so well with the lower contrast of this lens. What I do know is that when photographing a simple scene like below (contre-jour, green foliage, etc.) the combination of Portra 400 and the Summaron-M retains so much more of the translucency and brightness of the scene. The M240 equivalent would have significantly more detail but also significantly less life.

low325 Posted October 6, 2018 Share #1079 Posted October 6, 2018 I agree. The color profile is literally stuck, left behind in that signature. Technically behind it’s successors in every way. For what its worth, shot with these classic rendering lens gives its images a rather more imperfect look imo. Wild Flowers in Perth W Australia Leica M9.
