M28 Posted October 18, 2016 Author Share #241 Posted October 18, 2016 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well this is a really great summary discussion, we are getting somewhere. It now seems as if there is actually scope to make the digital m slightly thinner and certainly lighter than the film M's. That is really positive and something to look forward to. If the low light capability improves significantly and the megapixels go up a bit more and video improves plus some improvements to make focussing easier, then we will have an amazing next camera. I for one would like to see the range finder improved further. I really love the camera. I wish we had an indication from Leica of when it's coming. Something like" oh yeah we are working on it and you should expect one at Christmas or next year as we are ironing out the details on an amazing sensor." It was very surprising to me that it was not released at Photokina. A tech slut like me just can't wait.

It was very surprising to me that it was not released at Photokina. A tech slut like me just can't wait. I think you can take as Gospel, two undeniable facts: (1) Leica is working on a new M - that will have started shortly after the M(240) was released, and (2) very little that is discussed here will have any impact at all on the next M. My expectation is that Leica will work on improving what is there already - better ISO, better EVF, better DR etc. I don't expect the MP to increase (we haven't actually sen a big leap in MP performance anywhere - we have seen more MP, but it would be a stretch to say that in typical 35mm performance, that increase in MP has improved the final image - Leica is still offering "only" 24MP in 35mm format and 37.5 with the S(007)). Similarly, I don't think for a moment that Leica will change the dimensions of the M(240) in the next M. The M8 & M9 series cameras were slightly larger than the film Ms, and the M(240) slightly larger again, apparently because of the rangefinder improvements and the larger battery. I can't imagine Leica will revert to the previous rangefinder or a smaller battery. But, what I think, and what people here may want, won't make the slightest difference to a camera which is undoubtedly at some point in prototype testing, and will have been for some time ... freitz Posted October 19, 2016 Share #243 Posted October 19, 2016 So, I stumbled on this. And If I remember reading a few pages ago someone mentioned a few weeks. http://leicarumors.com/2016/10/18/new-wave-of-rumors-about-the-next-leica-m-camera-emerge.aspx/
lct Posted October 19, 2016 Share #244 Posted October 19, 2016 The next M will be less fat hopefully.
freitz Posted October 19, 2016 Share #245 Posted October 19, 2016 The next M will be less fat hopefully. Agreed. But honestly, 24 mega pixel is enough for me I would rather them get better performance out of this one like ISO DR etc. If they jump to 36 which would be even better I would want more ISO performance for sure. jaapv Posted October 19, 2016 Share #248 Posted October 19, 2016 I agree that those would be nice, but I fear at least part of your list will be as effective as the one I sent to Lapland last year...
lct Posted October 19, 2016 Share #249 Posted October 19, 2016 I agree that those would be nice, but I think your list will be as effective as the one I sent to Lapland last year... Why so? I have all this with my A7s mod already. Hard to imagine that Leica cannot compete with a 2 y/o Japanese body.

lct Posted October 19, 2016 Share #253 Posted October 19, 2016 The only superiority of the M240 lies in its rangefinder to me. Reason why i kept it of course but i don't intend to buy another M if its performances are still outdated compared to earlier bodies. YMMV.
Jeff S Posted October 19, 2016 Share #254 Posted October 19, 2016 Hard to imagine that Leica would even deign to compete with an A7 I hope not. I much prefer the M size, viewing, simplicity, controls, and even its shutter that discreetly lets you know hear the release. The A7 has little appeal for me. The M240 is the best built M to date, including the best RF mechanism, and the files are superb for my print needs. Any changes will be interesting.....no rush. kenf Posted October 19, 2016 Share #255 Posted October 19, 2016 Now, if Leica would just license the Fuji hybrid VF system and adapt/optimize it for manual focus we'd be getting somewhere...
lct Posted October 19, 2016 Share #256 Posted October 19, 2016 Best of both worlds would be an optical RF a la M240 and an accessory EVF as good as the SL's to me.
Paulus Posted October 19, 2016 Share #257 Posted October 19, 2016 Best of both worlds would be an optical RF a la M240 and an accessory EVF as good as the SL's to me. Might be the most easy way too. No hassle in the RF part.
Paulus Posted October 19, 2016 Share #258 Posted October 19, 2016 I was reading the intro page of Erwin Puts. he was so right, I think, so I did not buy any other camera since he wrote this, only a few lenses: " Do not buy a new camera for at least two years, but invest time and energy in exploiting the possibilities of the current one. If you think you need a new one, carefully compare existing camera with new camera and see if your photography really will improve in the direction you want to move.Buy yourself a spot-meter, learn the basics of the Zone System (it exists for digital photographers too!) and slow down your picture taking. Adapt your workflow such that the time spend with Lightroom or Photoshop can be eliminated. Go from RAW file to print in one step.Spend the time not sitting in front of a computer screen with taking pictures slowly and creatively.Make a real paper print of your best pictures and do not upload them to Facebook or whatever sharing site. Share it with your friends.": http://www.imx.nl/photo/ Maybe not a bad idea to wait a few years...
lct Posted October 19, 2016 Share #259 Posted October 19, 2016 [...] Go from RAW file to print in one step [...] Why shooting raw then?
Paulus Posted October 20, 2016 Share #260 Posted October 20, 2016 Why shooting raw then? I think Ansel Adams explaines this in " The Negative ". The purpose is,to get the perfect negative; to shoot and light in a way, that you already visualise what you want in the negative before you have made the photo. Adjust your shutterspeed and filters and develloping time. In a modern way; shoot the photo in a way, you don't have to do anything in post processing, the " negative " or DNG is as good as it gets already. In jpeg the camera has already some adjustment made, that you perhaps do not want. I think, that's what he means, but you have to ask him yourself if you want to be shure.
