Hi there, we've just got back from South Africa (see safari photo's on Facebook under "Photography by Tom Lane") and need to start planning for ....

John (erl); we arrive on the evening of the 29th March and thought of staying at an airport hotel and getting a flight over to Tasmania the following morning, then coming back to Melbourne on the 5th April ready for the big event. (VB and Pies.) Everyone we've spoken to here says Tasmania is great and well worth a visit. Just wondered if you agreed. We would rent a car and spend time driving around ... if you could advise any particular places to visit we would appreciate it.

...

Cheers, Tom

The Australian island state of Tasmania has 4 of the top 10 tallest tree species in the world and is home to the tallest flowering plant in the world, the Eucalyptus regnans, which can measure 99.8 meters (327 feet) tall.

Just for comparison, the tallest building in Tasmania’s capital city, Hobart, is only 73 meters high — this should give you an idea of the tree’s scale.

Enjoy!

We're thinking of staying in the Southbank Travelodge and wondered if anyone else was staying there. John (Erl) would this be a convenient hotel for the challenge and everything?

Appreciate comments and looking forward to meeting everyone in Aus.

Cheers, Tom

Tom some of the Aussies are staying there. This area of Melbourne is called Southbank (of the Yarra River) and it is a short stroll by footbridge to the southern edge of the CBD. Is a very popular area with lots of eateries too.

Erl will be able to advise on venues where the Challenge activities are planned.

Last but not least: would you recommend we have Velcro soled shoes, or magnetic soles to make sure we don't fall off the earth?

Cheers, Tom

Tom yes it will be safe to take off the velcro or magnetic soled shoes that you need at home on your upside down part of the planet.

Thanks for the advise Stefan, I will check but I'm sure that last time I went, back in 2000 I was okay with just my British License.

I guess you already know that you need visit visa. We need to apply for ours, but I believe it can now be done electronically, as opposed to going to London which we had to do last time.

Looking forward to catching up with you in Melbourne. If you've not already done so you may wish to consider using the Travelodge Southbank as a number of us are staying there.

Cheers, Tom

Thanks Tom, I've got an e-visitor visum granted, not sure, what happens, when I'm coming myself, instead of my avatar, but we'll see ;)

Travelodge Southbank it is then for Melbourne. Looking forward to meet you again and safe travels up to then (I guess the plural for travel is really appropriate for Eileen and you)

Cheers

Stefan

I spent yesterday tramping the city interviewing maitres and their restaurants etc for our formal dinner. I am waiting for their quotes to come in so I can select a suitable venue, based on price, ambience, location, etc. As soon as I get an overview, I will perhaps solicit a few opinions here as to which might suit us. Some of the local Aussie shooters and interstates ones may have opinions there would share.
