I wonder if the Panasonic lenses will activate their OIS on the CL and SL cameras. I would hope as the L mount is a Leica designed standard, that they will. I know the CL has an OIS on/off in its menu which is a very hopeful sign. I have to admit, I have never mounted my 24-90SL on my CL to see if the menu item is no longer greyed out - I must try that. I would be very interested in the Panasonic 70-200, given it is a far more reasonable size than the Leica 90-280, which I found far too big and heavy, rarely using it, so sold it. I hope Leica will also offer pixel shifting on the SL2.

In the S cameras Panasonic offers a ultra high resolution mode. A sort of pixel shift that combines 8 images that are automatically shot.

On the S1R the result is equivalent to “187 megapixel” and on the S1 still equivalent to “96 megapixel”. That will be fun with Leica SL APO lenses, so they can finally show their potential ...      👍

Hmm, 35 Noctilux-M?  (I think not - price, more than anything else); 35 Summicron-SL?  (I have no SL Summicrons, but at the moment, I'm using my M10-D - I'm also not much of a 35mm user); 28 Summicron-SL?  (now you're talking, but then I already have a 28 Summilux-M, which works perfectly on the SL).

I don't really see a need for AF on wides, but then ...

I find it easier to focus longer M lenses manually on the SL through focus peaking rather than wides. I find the focus peaking more precise when using wide open, but I guess it depends on use and customs

Agree on the Lux and SL, great match, so not sure about wides either, but if they are as spectacular as they are meant to be I can see one between 35, 28 and 21 coming my way whenever available - i.e. in the next decade sometime :)

As far as I understand the multishot technology with pixel shift, every shot is made with the original resolution of the sensor, 24 mpx for the S1. Than the software combines the shots.  It means that any good lens is capable.

You forget that the first time they can be used with 50 MP (only 24 until now), so it's the first time they can show what's in them (what Mr. Karbe has constructed).

So it is definitely a step up. We have already seen many times that often current lenses are not fit for the 50 MP league.     B)

I agree with you. If lesser Canon lenses cope well with the 50mpx sensor, I’d expect the Leica SL lenses will be good for at least 100mpx.

The problem is that many Canon lenses actually do not very well at 50 MP. At least wide open, stepped down many are ok.  I know because I'm also an owner of a 5Ds.
The best resolving lens I own for EOS is actually a Sigma 2.0/24-35.

At last year's Photokina, a Leica designer (I've forgotten who) said that L mount lenses are designed to resolve effectively with sensors of greater than 100 mps.

  • 3 weeks later...

Sigma is going to present a roadmap of their L-mount lenses at the CP+ show in Yokohama, Japan, at the end of February. It will be interesting what they will say about compatibility with DFD AF, as their current lenses are probably constructed with phase detect AF in mind.

Resolution and ISO comparisons .......

https://www.l-rumors.com/you-can-now-compare-the-panasonic-s1-s1r-files-with-nikon-and-sony-via-imaging-resource/

or rather not ......... comparing out of camera JPG's with no indication of the lenses used and with pre-production firmware as well.

Not worth the internet bandwidth wasted to view it .......

It’s going to be a terrible alliance if they don’t

So now I may have access to the 90-280 f/2.8-4 and a 1.4x teleconverter (126-392 f/4-5.6) made by Panasonic ?

This is interesting times for a Leica owner.

so big for a 35.....and the sigma ART f1.4 would be way cheaper.
