Voigtlander 25mm external viewfinder with 24mm lens - good enough?

Hey there, anyone use a 25mm viewfinder with a 24mm lens? Is it really going to cause any tangible problems?

I'm looking at the 21mm/25mm Voigtlander viewfinder which will give me the flexibility of moving to 21mm and/or 24mm focal lengths in the future. I'd prefer not to have a separate viewfinder for each lens and I'd *really* prefer to avoid the WATE viewfinder abomination.

Thoughts?

Yep. It'll be fine. No clip on viewfinder gives dead accurate framing anyway so you'd still have to adjust with any 24mm viewfinder.

There's also the multi optical VF that came out for the M8/WATE. That is smaller than the frankenfinder but allows 21, 24 and 28mm frame lines on a full frame camera.

Do you really need to ask this question? A 25mm viewfinder will give you the field of view of a 25mm lens. A 24mm lens is a little bit wider so you'll get a little bit more in the image than in the viewfinder frames, but you can just crop the image back down if your framing is that critical.

It's not rocket science, as they say!

Thanks for the help everyone. earleygallery, of course I don't *need* to ask, but I don't see the harm in doing so before I drop $200 on something. If I've learned anything, it's that one's assumptions aren't always reliable.

May I ask what question he should ask, if this is one he shouldn't?

From experience.......

You can use the 24mm lens without an external viewfinder at all. It gives you a fairly accurate view in the OVF albeit wall to wall with nothing left outside the frame like with a wider lens and framelines. It should pull up the frame line pair to let you see the edges without a frame line being in the way. If you also have a 21 mm lens you should be able to find a 21 mm viewfinder inexpensively. There was a discussion a while back about using the 24 without a viewfinder.

The Voigtlander has quite a bit of distortion. Optically, the Zeiss 25 mm (Additional framelines for 28) is vastly superior imo.  However,at some distances it may show a bit of parallax, as the ZM bodies have a lens placement that is different from Leica, in real life of minor importance.

Might be true but looking through and using I do prefer it. I even took my Leica 18mm in to the shop as it as not as good as the 'cheap' Voigtlander (my 21/25 and 15) in respect of visual quality. I did try the Zeiss but the 'look' was lower contrast and I did genuinely prefer the Voigt. I have no doubt that all will do a good enough job

Thank you all for the help on the subject - it gives me much more confidence moving forward. Part of me would love to just rely on the internal OVF, but I have come to really like seeing beyond the frame, hence the desire for an external OVF.

Thanks again all!
