If a Leica camera has an EVF, it won't be a M anymore. The M stands for "Mess-sucher", the german word for rangefinder.

So no rangerfinder, no M...

I am amazed at how many times this piece of information appears on this forum.   It would be so cool to give it a rest already.

It could get a rest, if some members were not so keen to castrate the M....

I am not sure anybody wants to suggest harm to the M. Rather I see 4 concurrent lines on the horizon to please everybody:

I M262: great Messsucher for the for those who get a kick out of mastering it even with their 135 and who don't care that framelines become meaningless with 28 and less. A separate forum is created and it is by invitation only.

II M240-follow-up with EyeRes external EVF: the lego approach to the M with the best of both worlds, but adds a big chunky hump, and why not add a grip onto it as well. Feels good to distinguish from SL crowd but is kind of irrational because its almost a lookalike now.

III MEVF: keeps the iconic design and has either a hybrid or fully EyeRes VF. Sells like warm bread but is considered the dark side with its black dot by the M262 crowd, which also runs a petition to remove the M from that "Messsucher-traitor". That's the one I want, but I also keep my MP to remind me how it was in the old days.

IV MM: monochrome a la carte, and you chose the VF from I-III; cause Leica couldn't figure out what people want

- As to the question, I guess we have to wait and see. People thought it was not possible to put a full-frame sensor into the M but then it happened. Perhaps we'll see option III one day, too.  :)

I thought that Epson made them was common knowledge? what info do you have?

The current  Q and SL cameras are made in cooperation with Panasonic. Most of the electronic innards, even if specified by Leica,  come from Panasonic or Panasonic-allied companies.  It is unknown who makes the EVF part. The old EVF-2 and all Olympus EVFs are made by Epson.

Well, for one thing, the current EVFs are not by Epson...

The old EVF-2 and all Olympus EVFs are made by Epson.

The EVF-2 being the current EVF of the M240 and being a clone of the Olympus VF-2, you agree that it is made by Epson then, right?

Current being the ones in the Q and the SL. The 240 one  is soon to be replaced by the upcoming M. I doubt that the EVF-2 is still in production, or even has been for some time. Leica probably has sufficient stock, but hardly a current product any more.
But to come back to the post that sparked this discussion, you were not referring to the 240 EVF.

Something is escaping me here. Why couldn't the new Epson panel be incorporated in a clip-on EVF?

However, the basic rumour by DP Review is nothing more than a speculation, which makes this whole thread rather hazy as nobody but Leica knows for sure and Mark Norton has not done an Anatomy thread. (yet? :D)

The T has an Epson EVF, so it is not impossible that the clip-ons will remain Epson, but it is by no means a given.
